Austin – No. 4 Texas Men's Tennis swept No. 35 Kentucky, 4-0, on Friday at the Texas Tennis Center. With the win, the Longhorns moved to 9-0 in the SEC and 18-3 overall.
Texas took the doubles point wins at Nos. 2 and 3 and followed with singles victories from junior No. 19 Sebastian Gornzy at No. 2, junior No. 53 Jonah Braswell at No. 4, and freshman Sebastian Eriksson at No. 5 for the clinch.
After doubles, Gorzny was first off the singles court with a 6-2, 6-1 win over No. 49 Jack Loutit. With the first three games having been on serve, Gorzny secured consecutive deuce points for a break and a hold and a 4-1 lead. He later broke again on a deuce point to take the set. Gorzny also controlled the second set, only allowing one hold for 3-1 on the way to the 6-1 win.
Moments later, Braswell extended the lead with an efficient 6-0, 6-1 win over No. 121 Charlelie Cosnet. Braswell swept the first set with only one game reaching deuce, which he won for 4-0. In the second, Cosnet's only win came on a deuce-point hold in the second game, which was the only deuce of that set.
Eriksson then clinched for Texas with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Eli Stephenson. After Stephenson held to begin the match, Eriksson set out on a 5-0 run, including a deuce-point break for 2-1. Stephenson won the next two games on a deuce-point hold and a break, but Erkisson broke back for the set. In the second, Eriksson held on a deuce point and broke for 2-0. Stephenson broke back for 2-1, but Eriksson broke again and held for 4-1. From there, Stephenson got one more game on serve, and Eriksson took the last two games for the win.
Three matches were left unfinished with the Longhorns leading two of them, while the other was even.
At No. 1, freshman No. 3 Timo Legout led No. 63 Antoine Ghibaudo, 7-6 (1), 3-2, when play stopped. Ghibaudo got out to a 3-0 lead with a deuce-point hold in the opening game and a break in the second. The next five games were then on serve until Legout got the break back to trail, 5-4, and held for 5-5. The last two games were also on serve to the tiebreaker. Legout picked up a mini-break to start that frame, and after Ghibaudo answered it, Legout ran the table the rest of the way, 6-0, for the win. In the second, the first three games were held starting with Legout, and the last two were broken for a 3-2 lead for Legout, including at deuce for Ghibaudo in the final game before play halted.
Senior No. 46 Pierre-Yves Bailly was even at one set apiece with No. 74 Jaden Weekes, 3-6, 6-1 at No. 3. Bailly broke and held to start the match, but Weekes responded with a 5-0 run, and the last two games were held for Weekes' win. In the second, Bailly held on a deuce point, and after Weekes also held, Bailly ran the table with his own 5-0 run for the win, including consecutive deuce points for a 3-1 break and a 4-1 hold.
In the last match at No. 6, sophomore Lucas Brown led Matt Rankin, 6-1, 4-4. Rankin held his opening serve, but Brown compiled an 8-0 run to take the set and establish a 2-0 lead in the second with only one of those games reaching deuce. Rankin broke back and held in the second set for 2-2, and after Brown held, Rankin held on a deuce point and broke for a 4-3 lead. Brown then broke back before play halted.
Earlier in doubles, Gorzny and Braswell were first off the court with a decisive 6-1 win over Cosnet and Martin Breysach at No. 2. The Longhorns vaulted out to a 4-0 lead, and after the Wildcats won their lone game on a hold, Texas held and broke on a deuce-point for the win.
Kentucky evened doubles with a 6-3 win at No. 1 as the No. 8 pair of Legout and Brown fell to No. 21 Stephenson and Loutit. The teams alternated 3-0 runs starting with the Wildcats, who served first, with deuce points on each of the Longhorns' first two serves. With the score tied, 3-3, Kentucky won the last three games, but both of the Wildcats' serves in that stretch went to deuce, including match point.
Not long after that, the point went to Texas with a 6-3 win by Bailly and Eriksson over Ghibaudo and Weekes at No. 3. The Wildcats broke first for a 2-1 lead, but the Longhorns broke back for 2-2 and held on a deuce point for a 3-2 lead. The next three games were also on serve until Texas broke on a deuce point for a 5-3 lead and served out the match.
The Longhorns will next host their final regular season home match of the season when they face No. 26 South Carolina on Sunday, March 30, at 1 p.m. CT. It will also be Senior Day with one senior in Bailly being recognized before the match.
