Right-hander tosses career-best seven shutout innings in 7-1 win

COLUMBIA, Mo. — Junior Ruger Riojas tossed a career-long seven shutout innings to guide No. 7 Texas (23-3, 8-1 SEC) to a 7-1 victory over Missouri (9-17, 0-9 SEC) in the series finale Saturday evening at Taylor Stadium.

Riojas (6-1) recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts and held the Tigers to just two hits and zero walks.

The righty retired 16 of the first 17 batters he faced, posting the longest outing by a Longhorn this season.

Texas' hitters backed Riojas from the onset, as the Longhorns scored in three of the first four frames.

Third baseman Casey Borba jumpstarted the offense with a solo shot in the second.

After Texas earned a pair of tallies with a bases-loaded walk and hit by pitch, first baseman Kimble Schuessler smacked a two-run homer to push the Longhorns' lead to 5-0.

Following Schuessler's second blast of the weekend, Texas capitalized on a Missouri error to cap off its seven-run outburst.

After Riojas departed, right-handers Andre Duplantier II and Jason Flores registered the final six outs to give the Longhorns their fourth sweep of the season.

With the victory, Texas is off to its best start in league play since 2010. That year, the Longhorns finished 24-3 in the Big 12, winning the conference championship.

Across the three-game set, center fielder Will Gasparino led the charge for Texas, totaling four home runs and 11 RBI.

The Longhorns will look for their seventh straight victory on Tuesday, as Texas returns home to host Texas State. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
