Longhorns extend winning streak to longest stretch in two years
AUSTIN, Texas — The 12th-ranked University of Texas baseball team won its 11th straight game, downing Santa Clara, 4-2, Friday evening at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Texas left-hander Jared Spencer (2-0) set the tone on the bump, tossing five shutout innings. Spencer recorded eight strikeouts and yielded only two hits, as the senior retired 10 of the final 11 batters he faced.
The Longhorns (11-1) broke the deadlock in the fifth behind shortstop Jalin Flores' two-run double. Flores' go-ahead knock marked his 10th extra-base hit in the last six contests.
After Santa Clara (7-5) answered with a run of its own one inning later, Texas immediately pushed its lead back to two in the bottom half.
For the second consecutive game, sophomore third baseman Casey Borba left the yard with a solo shot. Borba's blast traveled an estimated 408 feet and sent the 7,292 fans in attendance into a frenzy.
The Longhorns tacked on an insurance tally in the eighth with a bases-loaded walk, before junior righty Max Grubbs put on the finish touches to extend Texas' winning streak.
Grubbs (3) logged his third save of the year, pitching the final four frames in relief.
Santa Clara starter Brandon Gomez (1-2) picked up the loss. Gomez allowed two runs on five hits across five innings.
In the victory, sophomore second baseman Ethan Mendoza notched his sixth multi-hit performance over the last seven contests.
The Longhorns will look to lock up the series on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
