The Longhorns swept their two-match homestand and moved to 5-0 in the SEC.
Austin – No. 4 Texas Men's Tennis defeated No. 32 Auburn, 4-1, on Saturday at the Texas Tennis Center. The Longhorns swept their two-match homestand, including a 4-3 win over Mississippi State on Thursday, and moved to 5-0 in the SEC.
After Texas took the doubles point with a pair of 6-2 wins at Nos. 2 and 3, the Longhorns received victories from sophomore Lucas Brown at No. 6 and freshman Sebastian Eriksson at No. 5 for a 3-0 lead. Auburn picked up its point with a win at No. 2, but Texas clinched with a victory by junior No. 39 Jonah Braswell at No. 4.
Following doubles, Brown was first off the singles court with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Nicholas Heng. In the first set, Heng held on a deuce point, and after Brown also held, the players exchanged breaks with Heng's coming on a deuce point. From there, Brown went on a 4-0 run that included two deuce-point breaks for the set. In the second, Heng moved out to a 2-0 lead with a deuce-point break in the second game. However, Brown took control after that, setting out on a 6-0 run to the finish that had only one game reach deuce, which he won for 5-2.
Moments after that, Eriksson extended to the Texas lead to 3-0 with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Hamza Nasridinov. Eriksson broke to begin the match and consolidated for a 2-0 lead. After Nasridinov held in the next game, Eriksson won the next three for 5-1. Hamza picked up one more game on a deuce-point hold before Eriksson served out the set. In the second, Nasridinov broke first for a 3-1 lead on a deuce point and consolidated for 4-1, but Eriksson rallied with a 3-0 run, getting the break back on a deuce point. That would be the first of three-straight Nasridinov serves to go to deuce as he held the next one for a 5-4 lead but was broken on the following one for a 6-5 Eriksson lead. That was part of a final 3-0 run for Eriksson to win the match.
Not long after that, Auburn secured its lone point as junior No. 13 Sebastian Gorzny fell to Alex Frusina, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 2. Frusina began the match with a break and a hold for a 2-0 lead, and after Gorzny held his next serve on a deuce point for 2-1, Frusina broke the following one at deuce for 4-1. Gorzny responded with a break and a deuce-point hold for 4-3, but the next three games were on serve. The last two of those went to deuce, including a break-point chance for Gorzny at the end that Frusina managed to hold for the set. The second began the same way as the first with Frusina breaking and holding for a 2-0 lead, Gorzny holding on a deuce point, and Frusina holding for 3-1. This time, Gorzny held in the next game, starting a 3-0 run that included consecutive deuce-point wins for a 4-3 lead. The following three games were then on serve until Frusina broke for a 6-5 lead and served out the match.
All four of the decided singles matches ended within a few minutes of each other after Braswell clinched it with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Joey Phillips. Braswell broke on a deuce point and held to begin the match with a 2-0 lead, but Phillips went on a 3-0 run by getting the break back on a deuce point. However, Braswell broke again for a 5-4 lead and served out the set on a deuce point. The second set followed the same scoring as Brown's where Phillips took a 2-0 lead, but Braswell responded by sweeping the rest of the set for the match. Only one game in that stretch reached deuce with Braswell winning that to break for a 3-2 lead.
Two matches were left unfinished with freshman No. 7 Timo Legout three points away from a win, leading Will Nolan, 6-3, 5-4 (15-15) at No. 1. Legout broke first for a 2-1 lead, and the next two games both resulted in deuce-point breaks before Legout consolidated the last one for a 4-2 lead. Legout then broke again in the last game of the set for a 6-3 win. In the second, both players held serve on deuce points to start it, and the set stayed on serve until Nolan broke for a 4-3 lead on a deuce point. However, Legout broke right back and held for 5-4 before play halted.
In the other match, senior No. 64 Pierre-Yves Bailly was leading Billy Blaydes, 6-2, 5-5, at No. 3. Bailly sprinted out to a 4-0 lead after breaking on a deuce point in the opening game, and that would be all he needed as the rest of the set was on serve to his win. In the second set, Blaydes got out to a 2-0 lead, but Bailly broke back on a deuce point and held to even it. Again, the rest of the set was on serve from there with Bailly fending off a set point for Blaydes at deuce in the final completed game.
Earlier in doubles, the Longhorns posted a solid pair of 6-2 victories, starting with Gorzny and Braswell over Frusina and Phillips at No. 2. The Longhorns broke in the opening game and consolidated for a 2-0 lead. After the next three games were held for a 3-2 Texas lead, Gorzny and Braswell closed on a 3-0 run with a pair of deuce-point holds.
A few minutes later, Bailly and Eriksson won by the same score over Heng and Thomas Kennedy at No. 3. The Longhorns jumped out to a 4-0 lead in that match, including a deuce-point break for 3-0. The Tigers picked up holds for 4-1 and 5-2, but Texas finished with a deuce-point hold for the match.
In the remaining unfinished match, the No. 10 duo of Legout and Brown was two points away from a victory over the No. 13 pair of Nolan and Blades, leading 5-2 and 0-30 in the last game. Even though the Longhorns' first two service games went to deuce, the match stayed on serve until Texas broke at deuce for a 4-2 lead and consolidated for 5-2 before play stopped.
The Longhorns (14-2, 5-0 SEC) will next head out on the road to Fort Worth for their final regular season non-conference match against No. 2 TCU on Tuesday, March 11, at 5:30 p.m. CT.
