Longhorns’ 13-1 record marks best start to season since 2005

AUSTIN, Texas — No. 12 Texas secured its second straight home sweep Sunday afternoon, finishing off Santa Clara with a dominant 6-1 victory at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

Freshman left-hander Dylan Volantis was in control from the outset and the Longhorns (13-1) scored five runs with two outs to extend their winning streak to 13 games.

Texas' 13-1 record marks its best start to a season in 20 years. The Longhorns finished the 2005 campaign with a 56-16 ledger, capturing their sixth national championship.

In his first career start, Volantis (2-0) tossed 5 1/3 innings of one-run baseball to keep the Broncos (7-7) in check.

The 6-foot-6, 212-pound southpaw faced three over the minimum, limiting the visitors to just four hits. Volantis retired 13 of the final 16 batters he faced, sparked by a trio of strikeouts in the second.

At the plate, Texas totaled five of its eight hits with two outs, highlighted by three crucial swings.

After the Longhorns leaped ahead, 1-0, on a defensive miscue, Texas shortstop Jalin Flores socked his third homer of the year. With the solo shot in the third, Flores tallied his 13th extra-base hit over the last eight contests.

In the sixth, left fielder Tommy Farmer IV singled home a pair, cashing in on a two-out bases-loaded opportunity to pad the Longhorns' lead to 4-1.

Second baseman Ethan Mendoza provided a couple more insurance tallies in the eighth, delivering a hit with the bases full to cap off the scoring.

In the victory, relievers Andre Duplantier II, Kade Bing, Bryce Navarre and Thomas Burns combined to toss 4 2/3 scoreless frames, yielding only one hit.

Santa Clara starter Max Bayles (1-1) was tagged with the loss. Bayles allowed two runs — one earned — on four hits across five innings.

Up next, Texas is set to close out its five-game homestand Tuesday. The Longhorns welcome UT Arlington to UFCU Disch-Falk Field. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.
