Longhorns mount 14th comeback victory of season

AUSTIN, Texas — First baseman Kimble Schuessler hit a go-ahead solo shot in the seventh, as No. 1 Texas rallied for a 3-2 win against No. 8 Auburn on Thursday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

The Longhorns (31-5, 14-2 SEC) trailed the Tigers (27-11, 9-7 SEC) through the first 5 1/2 innings, but Texas scored the final three runs to mount its 14^th comeback victory of the year.

While Schuessler's game-winning swing proved to be the difference, the Longhorns delivered with two outs all night.

In the sixth, with Texas trailing Auburn, 2-1, shortstop Jalin Flores notched a game-tying double to erase the deficit. The extra-base hit marked Flores' team-leading 21^st game-tying or go-ahead RBI of the season.

Three innings earlier, second baseman Ethan Mendoza produced a two-out single to put the Longhorns on the board. Mendoza finished with a pair of knocks, posting his team-best 18^th multi-hit effort.

Auburn grabbed the lead in the top of the third on a two-run blast from right fielder Ike Irish.

Texas held the visitors there, as relievers Max Grubbs (6-0) and Dylan Volantis (9) limited the Tigers to only four baserunners the rest of the way.

Grubbs tossed a co-season-long 4 1/3 scoreless innings, striking out four batters in his fifth consecutive win.

The righty replaced starter Jared Spencer after just 2 2/3 frames and promptly set down 11 of the next 13 hitters.

Volantis retired the final eight Tigers to seal the Longhorns' seventh ranked victory of the year.

Texas will look to secure its 12^th consecutive conference series win on Friday. First pitch between the Longhorns and Tigers is slated for 6 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
