Risk and Reward: Scott’s single scores Henry, clinches series for No. 3/3 Softball
04.19.2025 | Softball
Texas walks off No. 9 LSU for the second time during the three-game series.
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas began Saturday's series finale against LSU with a one-run lead and the Longhorns ended the 2-hour, 7-minute game with a one-run lead following a game-ending, infield single off the bat of Mia Scott to score Kayden Henry from second and give the Longhorns a 6-5 victory over the Tigers.
And it all happened within a blink of an eye.
Down to their last out and the game-tying run in the form of Leighann Goode standing on third base, sophomore Kayden Henry pulled a 2-1 pitch underneath the diving glove of LSU first baseman Tori Edwards and into right field to score Goode and tie the game at 5-5.
Two pitches later, Henry successfully stole second base – her 25th stolen base on the season – to put herself into scoring position with Mia Scott at the plate.
It was the right place to be, too, as Scott hit a 1-1 pitch off the ground, less than a foot in front of home plate that forced LSU pitcher Sydney Berzon (15-5) to react and make a play on the ball. But by the time Berzon gathered the softball and set her feet, Scott was racing down the first base line and beat Berzon's throw to the bag.
Thinking the out was made, Edwards was delayed coming off the bag, which allowed Henry to round third base and head to the plate, where Edwards threw the ball.
But LSU catcher Maci Bergeron was unable to gather the throw as Henry was sliding across home plate for Texas' second walk-off win over the Tigers in the last three days.

FROM HEAD COACH MIKE WHITE
"I can't even remember what all happened at the end there, to be honest, all I can say is there was a play at first base. Mia (Scott) had an opportunity to beat the ball out at first base and we were able to do that. (LSU) was trying to get the (out) call and was a little muffed for a split second, so we were able to send Kayden (Henry) home."
FROM SOPHOMORE KAYDEN HENRY
"That last play was just like a 'Risk and Reward' situation. Being the baller and competitor that Mia (Scott) is, I knew she was going to beat (Berzon's) throw, so I wanted to get to third hard and then take the risk of going home. If I'm out, then we play another inning and keep grinding this out, or I can be safe and we win."
GAME NOTES
- By driving in Kayden Henry to end the game, Mia Scott was credited with her 172nd career RBI, moving the fourth-year senior into sole possession of third place on the program's career RBI list after passing Mary Iakopo (2019-22).
- By earning the starting assignment at third base, Mia Scott was in a Texas starting lineup for the 234th time in her career, which ties Taylor Thom (2011-14), Taylor Hoagland (2010-13) and Nadia Taylor (2009-12) for the third most starts by a Longhorn softball student-athlete in program history.
- With her next start, Scott will join Janae Jefferson (269) and Desiree Williams (247) as the only Texas softball student-athletes to start in 235-or-more career games.
- Reese Atwood's second-inning solo home run marked the 50th career home run for the Longhorns' junior catcher, joining Taylor Hoagland (58) as the only Texas softball student-athletes with 50-or-more career home runs.
- By stealing second base with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Kayden Henry was credited with her 53rd career stolen base, which ties her with Mia Scott (2022-P) for 10th on the program's career stolen base list.
- By earning the win in Saturday's game, Teagan Kavan was credited with her 40th career win, joining Mac Morgan (2023-P) as the only active Longhorn softball pitchers with 40-or-more career victories on the Forty Acres.
UP NEXT
- Having now concluded a seven-game home stretch, Texas (41-6, 13-5) will hit the road, again, for a four-game tilt throughout the state of Oklahoma, where the Longhorns will play No. 21/22 Oklahoma State on Wednesday (7 p.m. CT/ESPNU), before opening up a three-game series at No. 2/4 Oklahoma on Friday (5 p.m. CT/ESPNU).
