Gutierrez shuts down Cowgirls, paces No. 2/3 Softball to 42nd win

Texas earns first shutout road win over Oklahoma State in Stillwater since 2015
STILLWATER, Okla. – When Texas softball head coach Mike White needed a standout pitching performance from someone other than his sophomore ace, the seventh-year head coach got just that from his junior right-hander Citlaly Gutierrez during the Longhorns' 1-0 win at No. 23/23 Oklahoma State on Wednesday night.
Gutierrez, who has excelled in pitching appearances at Cowgirl Stadium in Stillwater, Okla., continued that trend as the Stamford, Texas native tossed a season-high 100 pitches in a season-best six innings of work against the Oklahoma State offense. It was the longest outing for Gutierrez since throwing seven innings against Oklahoma during last season's Big 12 Championship game on May 11, 2024, a span of 26 appearances. Her three strikeouts on the night were the most in a start since fanning seven Oakland batters in four innings of work in Columbus, Ohio on March 8.
None of Gutierrez' four hits surrendered to 24 batters faced went for extra base hits. And, over the course of her six innings worked in the circle, the Cowgirls had a runner on third on two separate occasions: both coming with two away in the bottom of the third and fifth innings. Gutierrez went on to retire the next batter to strand the runner on third.
Kayden Henry's fifth inning run scored on a two-out Mia Scott single to centerfield provided all the cushion needed Gutierrez (9-0) and Teagan Kavan (S, 3) to earn Texas' first shutout victory over Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Okla., since May 2, 2015, when the Longhorns earned a 9-0 victory in five innings.
FROM HEAD COACH MIKE WHITE
"We knew tonight was going to be a tough game no matter what the records are; this place is a tough place to play. We haven't had the best history up here and (Oklahoma State) is always tough. Ruby (Meylan) is an excellent pitcher and threw a good game against us. It was just a matter of who was going to break first and fortunately we were able to get that run in during the fifth inning and were able to hold it. Citlaly (Gutierrez) pitched a great game for us, and we really needed that in that situation."
FROM JUNIOR CITLALY GUTIERREZ
"I was just confident in myself tonight. For most of this season, my role has been in relief so once I was told I had the start today, I just knew I had to be confident in myself and just do my job. I think my confidence just got me through the whole game. And then the team energy and loving on each other always made me feel confident jogging back out to the circle."
