Longhorns erase five-run deficit for largest comeback win of season
SAN MARCOS, Texas — Shortstop Jalin Flores smacked a go-ahead grand slam in the ninth, as No. 1 Texas rallied to win a 14-11 slugfest over Texas State on Tuesday evening at Bobcat Ballpark.
The Longhorns (34-5) overcame a pair of deficits, trailing the Bobcats (19-21) by as many as five runs in their largest come-from-behind victory of the year.
Texas scored 10 times over the final three innings, capping off its 16th comeback win in grand style.
The junior's 10th blast also marked the Longhorns' first grand slam of the season and the fifth of his career.
Flores' 424-foot shot to straightaway center moved him into a tie for the seventh-most career homers (32) by a Texas player, matching Danny Peoples (1994-96).
The 6-foot-2, 210-pound slugger totaled a season-high five RBI to help erase both a 4-0 hole and a 9-4 deficit.
In the victory, third baseman Casey Borba delivered a career night. The sophomore launched a three-run jack and finished with a career-best five RBI.
Catcher Rylan Galvan joined the dinger derby by crushing a two-run blast to bring the Longhorns within a tally in the eighth.
Following Flores' heroics, right-hander Thomas Burns (3) struck out the side to slam the door, securing Texas' sixth straight win.
Righty Cody Howard (1-0) earned the victory, retiring four of the five batters he faced.
Up next, the Longhorns welcome in-state rival Texas A&M to UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The three-game set is slated to begin at 7 p.m. Friday.
