No. 2/3 Softball’s seventh-inning rally fizzles in Game 1 loss to No. 3/4 Oklahoma
04.25.2025 | Softball
Texas outscored Oklahoma, 6-1, over the final four innings.
NORMAN, Okla. – In televised promotional videos throughout Friday's national television broadcast of No. 2/3 Texas' 7-6 loss at No. 3/4 Oklahoma, Longhorn junior pitcher Citlaly Gutierrez was heard saying, "We are going to give that Texas Fight until the very last out."
That's exactly what happened at Love's Field to begin the weekend's three-game SEC series.
After Texas fell behind 6-0 following the third inning, senior Mia Scott pushed the Longhorns into the run column with a two-out, solo home run for her seventh long ball on the season and sixth against SEC pitching. The two-out momentum continued as Reese Atwood drew a full-count walk, stole second base – her sixth stolen base on the season – and then scored from second on Joley Mitchell's single to center field.
Texas, again, chipped away at its deficit with a three-run, three-hit top of the fifth that was highlighted by more two-out hits off the bat of Scott and Atwood.
Oklahoma responded with a single run in the bottom of the fifth to push its lead back out to two.
Unlike the fourth and fifth innings, Texas didn't wait until it had two outs in an inning before making a rally in the seventh.
Trailing by two, Ashton Maloney chopped a pitch into left field and then Kayden Henry followed by reaching on a second fielding error by the right side of the Sooners' infield. A groundout by Scott advanced both Maloney and Henry into scoring position. With first base open, Atwood was intentionally walked before being lifted for a pinch runner in Adayah Wallace.
Moments later, Maloney cut the deficit to one by scoring from third on a wild pitch, which resulted in both Henry – representing the game-tying run – and Wallace – the go-ahead run – to advance a base. But both were left on base as Mitchell flew out to centerfield to end the contest.
FROM HEAD COACH MIKE WHITE
"Obviously, we got behind there early and congratulations to Oklahoma, they played well. They hit the ball extremely well off Teagan Kavan and that forced us to make a change, but we were able to slow them down a little bit. We did fight back and make a game of it and it was really interesting at the end, but, unfortunately, we lost out on this one. But it was great to have a good crowd out there. Obviously, we set an attendance record for them, which is awesome and seems like it happens everywhere Texas goes. We did that at Oklahoma State on Wednesday night, so people want to see quality teams play and that was obviously with the two teams out there today."
FROM JUNIOR REESE ATWOOD
"I think, overall, Teagan (Kavan) was hitting her spots, for the most part, and Oklahoma just came out and punched. They punched and were aggressive and were swinging at first pitches. They were hitting all over the plate, so we just need to go out there and do a better job as an offense of punching the way they did."
GAME NOTES
- With her fourth-inning, solo home run, Mia Scott has now hit one home run against Oklahoma pitching in each of her four seasons wearing the Texas Burnt Orange and White.
- With her two-RBI performance on the afternoon, Mia Scott becomes just the third Longhorn softball student-athlete to drive in 175-or-more career runs.
- As a result of her two-run single in the top of the fifth, Reese Atwood now has 65 RBI on the season, which is one shy of tying Lindsey Stephens (2014) and Taylor Thom (2013) for second on the program's single-season list.
- With two more RBI, Atwood will hold the top two spots on the program's single-season RBI list after setting the program's single-season record with 90 throughout the 2024 campaign.
- As a result of driving in five runs throughout Friday's game, Texas has now been credited with 344 RBI on the season, which passes the 2012 team for the third-most RBI by a Longhorn team in a single season.
- With Mia Scott's fourth-inning home run, the Texas offense has now scored at least one run in 80 consecutive games, which marks the second time in program history the Longhorns have scored in 80 straight contests.
UP NEXT
- Texas (42-7, 13-6) will look to bounce back from Friday's outcome when the Longhorns take the field at Love's Field, again, on Saturday, April 26 for a 6:30 p.m. CT start time against No. 3/4 Oklahoma (40-5, 14-5).
