Longhorns become fourth team to start 18-2 or better in SEC play since 1996
AUSTIN, Texas — No. 1 Texas clinched its 13th straight conference series win, downing rival Texas A&M, 3-2, in the Cotton Holdings Lone Star Showdown on Saturday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
With the victory, the Longhorns (36-5, 18-2 SEC) became only the fourth team to start 18-2 or better in league play since the SEC expanded to a 30-game slate in 1996.
Texas limited the Aggies (24-18, 8-12 SEC) to a tally in both the first and the ninth on just five hits.
Left-hander Luke Harrison (4-0) tossed six innings of one-run baseball, striking out six along the way.
Righty Thomas Burns punched out three hitters over a pair of innings, running his fastball up to 99 mph, bridging the gap to the final frame.
Southpaw Dylan Volantis (11) retired the lone two men he faced on eight pitches to lock down the Longhorns' first series victory over Texas A&M in 15 years.
At the plate, second baseman Ethan Mendoza led the charge with his team-leading 20th multi-hit performance.
Mendoza smacked a game-tying solo shot in the third before bookending the offensive outburst with a run-scoring double in the seventh.
The sophomore finished 3-for-4 with two RBI, launching his first homer since March 4.
Texas will look to cap off its seventh sweep of the year in the weekend finale on Sunday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
