Spencer leads No. 5 Baseball to 5-1 win over No. 3 Georgia

Senior registers career-high 11 strikeouts across career-long 7 2/3 innings
AUSTIN, Texas — Behind a career night from left-hander Jared Spencer, No. 5 Texas took the series opener over No. 3 Georgia, 5-1, Friday evening at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Spencer struck out a career-high 11 batters in the longest outing during his time as a collegian, tossing 7 2/3 innings to lead the Longhorns (24-4, 9-1 SEC) to their sixth straight conference win.
The senior limited the Bulldogs (29-3, 8-2 SEC) to a season-low one run on two hits in a 111-pitch effort.
Spencer became the first Longhorn to pitch into the eighth inning this year.
The 6-foot-3, 210-pound hurler retired the first 13 batters he faced, registering six punchouts across the first 4 1/3 frames.
After Georgia loaded the bases on a 68-mph infield hit and a pair of walks, Spencer induced a pop out to strand a trio of Bulldogs.
Texas' ace breezed through the sixth, before his lone blemish came in the seventh on a solo shot from left fielder Nolan McCarthy.
Following the homer, Spencer set down five consecutive batters, quickly tallying two outs in the eighth.
The Bulldogs worked back-to-back free passes, as Spencer exited to a standing ovation from the 7,246 fans in attendance.
Southpaw Dylan Volantis (7) recorded the final four outs to give the Longhorns their third top-3 victory of the year.
Texas totaled all five of its runs across the fourth and fifth frames.
Center fielder Will Gasparino and third baseman Casey Borba each smacked two-run blasts, while first baseman Kimble Schuessler delivered an RBI double.
Georgia lefty Charlie Goldstein (0-1) was tagged with the loss, lasting just 3 1/3 innings.
The Longhorns will look to secure their sixth straight series win on Saturday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
