Longhorns score seven unanswered runs to clinch series
AUSTIN, Texas — The fifth-ranked Texas Longhorns erased a four-run deficit to notch a 7-4 series-securing victory over No. 3 Georgia on Saturday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
The Longhorns (25-4, 10-1 SEC) trailed 4-0 through four frames, but Texas scored seven unanswered to mount its 11th comeback victory of the season.
After the Bulldogs (29-4, 8-3 SEC) plated tallies in three of the first four innings, the Longhorns' offense came alive.
In the fifth, designated hitter Jaquae Stewart cut the hole in half with one swing of the bat.
Stewart swatted a 409-foot two-run blast to right, breaking up Georgia starter Brian Curley's no-hit bid.
The sophomore's first homer in burnt orange brought the 7,192 fans in attendance to their feet and ignited the Longhorns' dugout.
Two innings later, Texas put a five-spot on the board.
With runners on second and third, shortstop Jalin Flores lifted a double off the wall in straightaway center to level the score, 4-4.
Catcher Rylan Galvan followed with a free pass before center fielder Will Gasparino delivered a two-run double to cap off the comeback.
First baseman Kimble Schuessler added an insurance tally for the Longhorns, chasing home a run with a sacrifice fly.
Right-hander Max Grubbs (3-0) kept the Bulldogs quiet out of the bullpen, tossing 3 1/3 scoreless to earn the win. Grubbs scattered two hits and struck out a pair to help Texas clinch its seventh series victory of the year.
Southpaw Luke Harrison punched out a career-high nine across the first 5 2/3 frames. Harrison allowed four runs — three earned — on six hits.
Georgia righty Kolten Smith (2-1) was charged with the loss.
The Longhorns will look to complete the sweep on Sunday. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
