Longhorns post fifth run-rule victory of season
AUSTIN, Texas — No. 2 Texas scored nine times over the first two innings, cruising to a 12-2 run-rule victory over Houston Christian on Tuesday evening at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
The Longhorns (27-4) mounted tallies in four of their six trips to the plate, highlighted by a six-run second.
Second baseman Ethan Mendoza led the charge, as the sophomore totaled a three-hit effort and a career-best five RBI.
Mendoza delivered a two-run single as part of the crooked number in the second, before notching an RBI base hit in the third. Two innings later, he capped off his career night with a double that drove in a pair of tallies.
Meanwhile, outfielders Easton Winfield and Tommy Farmer IV each plated a couple of runs on doubles, while first baseman Kimble Schuessler socked a solo shot in the third.
On the mound, Texas used five pitchers to hold the Huskies (20-11) to just two runs on four hits.
Right-hander Jason Flores (3-1) earned the win in relief of southpaw Kade Bing, who notched the first four outs.
Flores tossed 2 2/3 innings, yielding both tallies on back-to-back ground outs in the third.
Righties Grayson Saunier, Drew Rerick and Aiden Moffett combined to hold Houston Christian hitless over the final three frames.
Up next, the Longhorns make their first-ever trip to Lexington, Ky., as Texas opens a three-game set against the Wildcats at 5:30 p.m. CT on Friday.
