Longhorns suffer first loss since 15-inning defeat at Kentucky on April 12
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The No. 1 Texas baseball team had its 10-game winning streak snapped by No. 11 Arkansas, falling in the series opener, 9-0, Thursday night at Baum-Walker Stadium.
The Longhorns (38-6, 19-3 SEC) picked up their first loss since April 12, ending their second double-digit winning streak of the year.
Texas' five previous losses came by a combined 11 runs.
Arkansas (38-9, 15-7 SEC) scored nine runs across the first four frames, highlighted by a quartet of extra-base hits.
Eight of the nine Razorbacks recorded hits, as one of the top offensive teams in the country chased righty Ruger Riojas (8-2) in the fourth.
Riojas — who entered tied for sixth nationally in wins – logged his first defeat since March 18.
Arkansas starter Zach Root (6-3) tossed eight shutout innings, registering a career-high 11 strikeouts along the way. Root surrendered just two hits.
In the loss, Texas right-hander Cody Howard pitched a season-long 3 1/3 innings and punched out three hitters. Meanwhile, southpaw Bryce Navarre notched a scoreless eighth.
Despite the setback, the Longhorns are one of four teams to start 19-3 or better in SEC play since the league expanded to a 30-game conference slate in 1996, alongside 2000 South Carolina, 2013 Vanderbilt and 2022 Tennessee.
The Longhorns will look to even the series with the Razorbacks on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Baum-Walker Stadium.
