NORMAN, Okla. — Right fielder Max Belyeu delivered a go-ahead three-run homer in the ninth to lift No. 3 Texas over Oklahoma, 7-4, as the Longhorns clinched the Southeastern Conference regular season title on Thursday night at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
Texas (41-10, 21-7 SEC) is the first team to win the SEC in its first season since the league's inaugural campaign in 1933.
With the Longhorns and Sooners (32-18, 13-15 SEC) deadlocked at four runs apiece, Belyeu stepped to the plate with runners on the corners and no outs.
Belyeu — who had missed the previous 26 games with a thumb injury — announced his return with authority.
The 6-foot-2, 215-pound slugger crushed the first pitch he saw from Oklahoma closer Dylan Crooks (2-1) and deposited it off the batter's eye in straightaway center.
After going hitless in his first four at-bats, Belyeu's 418-foot moonshot helped cap off Texas' 21st comeback victory of the year.
Left-hander Dylan Volantis (4-0) put on the finishing touches with a scoreless bottom half to secure the Longhorns' 81st regular season conference championship in program history.
To pull off the historic win, Texas rallied from a pair of deficits.
The Longhorns overcame an early 1-0 hole, pushing across a tally to level the score in the third.
Oklahoma left fielder Trey Gambill immediately responded with a solo blast before catcher Easton Carmichael added an RBI double two frames later.
In the seventh, Texas outfielder Tommy Farmer IV — who finished with a game-high three hits — notched a game-tying two-run single.
First baseman Kimble Schuessler handed the Longhorns their first lead of the contest, mounting an RBI single in the eighth.
The Sooners answered with a run-scoring hit of their own, setting the stage for Belyeu's heroics.
In the victory, Texas' bullpen held Oklahoma to just a pair of tallies on two hits across the final 7 1/3 innings.
Right-hander Grayson Saunier pitched 3 1/3 frames of one-run baseball in relief of starter Kade Bing.
Saunier retired nine of the 11 batters he faced, recording three strikeouts along the way.
Righty Thomas Burns set down the Sooners in order in the seventh before giving way to Volantis, who registered the last six outs.
The Longhorns will look to lock down their third straight series win in Norman on Friday. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.
