Waco, Texas – No. 3 Texas Men's Tennis fell to No. 2 TCU, 4-2, in the NCAA Tournament semifinals on Saturday at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco. The Longhorns finished the season with their third-straight Final Four appearance and fifth in the last six years. They were also the SEC regular season and tournament champions in their debut year in the conference.
Texas closed the season 29-5 with the 29 victories matching the 2019 team for the most in a season dating back to 1975 when teams began playing shorter schedules.
In the match, TCU secured the doubles point with wins at Nos. 3 and 1 and then took a 2-0 overall lead with a win at No. 3 singles. The Longhorns got on the board with a win by freshman Sebastian Eriksson at No. 4, and after the Horned Frogs moved to a 3-1 lead with a win at No. 5, Texas cut it to one again with a victory by junior No. 26 Sebastian Gorzny at No. 2. The last two matches went to third sets with the Longhorns having opportunities in both, but TCU claimed the match at No. 6 to clinch.
After doubles, the Horned Frogs took their 2-0 lead as senior No. 54 Pierre-Yves Bailly was downed by No. 37 Lui Maxted, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 3. Maxted pushed out to a 3-0 lead with a break in the second game, but Bailly responded with a 3-0 run of his own that included a deuce-point break. However, Maxted went on a 9-0 run from there for the win.
Eriksson was next off the singles court with a 6-4, 6-0 win over No. 95 Cooper Woestendick at No. 4. It was Woestendick who broke in the opening game on a deuce point and then held for 2-0, but Eriksson answered with a 3-0 run for the lead. Woestendick held on a deuce point in the next game and broke to retake a 4-3 lead. However, it was all Eriksson after that, as he went on a 9-0 run that included three deuce-point breaks that he recorded to win the first set, for a 2-0 lead in the second, and to win the match.
The Horned Frogs reestablished a two-point lead as junior No. 72 Jonah Braswell fell to Albert Pedrico, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 5. Braswell held on a deuce point to begin the match and the first 10 games all stayed on serve to 5-5. Braswell had set points with a 0-40 lead in the last of those, but Pedrico rallied to hold and then secured the set's only break for 6-5 before serving out the set. Pedrico broke to start the second set, but Braswell broke back on a deuce point. Pedrico broke again and consolidated it for a 3-1 lead, and after Braswell held for 3-2, Pedrico finished on a 3-0 run for the match, including a deuce-point break for 5-5.
Gorzny's match was the first to go to three sets as he posted a top-10 win over No. 10 Pedro Vives, 6-2, 3-6, 6-0, at No. 2. Gorzny started the match by breaking at love and followed with a deuce-point hold for a 2-0 lead. The next four games were also on serve until Gorzny broke again for 5-2 and then served out the set. In the second, the players exchanged holds at love, and then Gorzny broke at love before Vives broke back on a deuce point. The next three games were on serve for a 4-3 lead for Vives before he broke again on a deuce point and held for the set. The third was then all Gorzny, who swept it for the win.
That left two matches on the court in third sets, starting with No. 6 where Lucas Brown had a 3-1 lead in his, but eventually fell to Roger Pascual, 6-4, 0-6, 6-3. Brown broke first in the match for a 2-1 lead that he consolidated for 3-1. The next two games both went to deuce, but Pascual was able to win both to even it. He later won a third deuce point in the set to hold for a 5-4 lead before breaking in the last game to win it. Brown flipped the script by setting out on an 8-0 run to sweep the first set, during which he surrendered only 10 points, and then establish a 2-0 lead in the second by only giving up one more point. Both players held their next serves to give Brown a 3-1 lead, but Pascual turned the match around again by going on a 5-0 run for the win and clinch.
In the remaining match, freshman No. 1 Timo Legout trailed No. 8 Jack Pinnington
6-4, 3-6, 3-4, at No. 1. Pinnington served first and later broke first for a 4-2 lead, but Legout broke back on a deuce point to start a 4-0 run for the win. Pinnington held at love to start the second set, and the next three games all went to deuce with Pinnington taking the first two for a 3-0 lead, and Legout holding for the last one for 3-1. The set was then on serve the rest of the way to Pinnington's win, despite Legout taking a 0-30 lead in the last game and later having two break points that Pinnington was able to deflect. In the third set, Pinnington broke on a deuce point for a 2-1 lead, then held and broke again for 4-1. Legout got one of the breaks back for 4-2 and held for 4-3 before play stopped.
Earlier in doubles, the match at No. 3 was first to finish as Bailly and Eriksson were downed by Pedrico and Duncan Chan, 6-3. TCU served first and the first five games were on serve until the Horned Frogs picked up the only break of the match for a 4-2 lead that they maintained to the win.
TCU then clinched the point as the No. 10 pair of Legout and Brown fell to No. 2 Vives and Maxted by the same score at No. 1. That match also featured just one break, which the Horned Frogs grabbed for a 3-1 lead on the way to the win.
Gorzny and Braswell led the unfinished match at No. 2 by a 5-4 score over Pinnington and Woestendick when play halted. In another match with only one break, the Longhorns earned it on a deuce point for a 3-2 lead. They later had a match point at deuce while leading 5-3 in the final game, but the Horned Frogs held for the 5-4 final margin.
