No. 2 Baseball drops 12-inning contest to No. 21 Tennessee in SEC Tournament Quarterfinals

Walker tosses career-long 4 1/3 innings in first career Division I start.
HOOVER, Ala. — In its Southeastern Conference Tournament debut, the second-ranked University of Texas baseball team fell to No. 21 Tennessee, 7-5, in 12 innings Thursday afternoon at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium.
Tennessee infielder Gavin Kilen delivered a two-run double to vault the Volunteers (43-15) in front and punch their ticket to the tournament's semifinals on Saturday.
The Longhorns (42-12) — who became the first team to win the SEC in its first season since the league's inaugural campaign in 1933 — matched Tennessee step-for-step across the first 11 innings, but Kilen came through with the final blow.
In the 10th, Kilen smacked a solo shot to push the Volunteers ahead, 5-4, before Texas responded and put the potential game-winning run in scoring position.
After a leadoff single and an error, first baseman Kimble Schuessler drove in catcher Rylan Galvan to level the contest.
Schuessler and second baseman Ethan Mendoza each finished with a pair of hits and two RBI in the defeat.
Tennessee right-hander Nate Snead (4-1) earned the win, tossing 2 2/3 scoreless in relief.
SEC Freshman of the Year Dylan Volantis (4-1) picked up the loss. Volantis struck out the side in the 11th before Kilen's decisive swing an inning later.
In his first career Division I start, Texas lefty Ethan Walker pitched a career-long 4 1/3 frames, limiting the Volunteers to one earned run on just one hit. Walker faced the minimum through four innings, taking a no-hitter into the fifth.
Next, the Longhorns turn their attention to the 2025 NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament selection show, which is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday on ESPN2.
