No. 2 Baseball opens NCAA Austin Regional with 7-1 win over Houston Christian

The Longhorns bat around in five-run fifth to clinch spot in winners’ bracket.
AUSTIN, Texas — No. 1 seed Texas used a five-run fifth to cruise to a 7-1 win over No. 4 seed Houston Christian in the opening game of the Austin Regional on Friday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. With the victory, the Longhorns (43-12) punched their spot into the winners' bracket at 8 p.m. on Saturday.
In the pivotal frame, the Longhorns scored all five of their runs with two outs, sparked by Kimble Schuessler's two-run single. Two pitches later, Adrian Rodriguez followed with an RBI single to plate Schuessler and extend the lead to 4-1. After Jalin Flores beat out an infield hit, Casey Borba kept the line moving with a run-scoring knock of his own. Will Gasparino — who represented the ninth batter of the inning — roped an RBI double to left to cap off the offensive outburst.
On the mound, Texas limited Houston Christian (32-24) to one run on eight hits. Right-hander Grayson Saunier (2-0) earned the victory in relief of opener Ethan Walker, who faced the first seven hitters. Saunier allowed the lone tally across 3 2/3 innings.
Righty Hudson Hamilton (2) capped off the Longhorns' win, retiring 11 of the final 12 Huskies. Hamilton notched a career-high four strikeouts and surrendered just one hit.
Houston Christian starter Parker Edwards (3-5) was charged with the loss. Edwards yielded seven runs — one earned — in 4 2/3 frames. The Huskies committed three errors in the defeat.
Texas' postseason run continues on Saturday, as the Longhorns will play the winner of second-seeded UTSA and third-seeded Kansas State at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
