Saunier pitches season-long 5 1/3 innings in defeat
AUSTIN, Texas — The top-ranked University of Texas baseball team dropped its first-ever regular-season meeting against Florida, 8-2, on Friday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
The Gators (34-17, 12-13 SEC) put up a six-spot in the first, which proved to be insurmountable for the Longhorns (39-9, 19-6 SEC) to overcome.
In the opening frame, Florida sent 12 batters to the plate to push across half a dozen runs on four hits.
Center fielder Hayden Yost and second baseman Justin Nadeau both plated a trio of tallies, including a couple of two-run singles in the first. The duo finished with five of the visitor's nine hits.
Left-hander Pierce Coppola (3-0) logged the win for the Gators. Coppola tossed two scoreless innings and struck out three.
The Longhorns used four pitchers, highlighted by righty Grayson Saunier.
Saunier pitched a season-long 5 1/3 frames, holding Florida to two runs. The junior notched a season-best four strikeouts.
Texas will look to even the series on Saturday. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Prior to the middle contest of the three-game set, the Longhorns will honor their 2005 national championship team. Texas captured its sixth national title in 2005, besting the runner-up Gators twice in the College World Series.
