No. 5 Volleyball sweeps No. 12 Creighton at Opening Spike Classic

MADISON, Wisc. – No. 5 Texas Volleyball swept No. 12 Creighton, 3-0, in its opening match of the 2025 season at the Opening Spike Classic held at the Kohl Center.
Friday night's win marks the 160th ranked win in last 21 seasons for Texas and improved the Longhorns' record against the Blue Jays to 2-1. Texas was led by junior Torrey Stafford's first double-double (12 kills / 15 digs) in her Longhorn debut.
Freshman Abby Vander Wal recorded double digit kills with 10, while fellow freshman Cari Spears recorded eight and added seven digs and two blocks. Sophomore Ayden Ames led the team with five blocks and four kills.
Texas finished the match hitting .186 and totaled eight blocks to Creighton's .118 hitting percentage.
SET 1: The Longhorns got off to a blazing start to begin the match with Ella Swindle and Nya Bunton teaming up for back-to-back blocks to take a 4-2 lead. The Longhorns capitalized off of Stafford, Spears and Vander Wal each recording three kills to take the early 1-0 lead after taking the set, 25-21.
SET 2: Texas took the 2-0 lead after Stafford took over with five kills to lead both teams in the second. The Longhorns held the Blue Jays to just 10 kills and a .061 hitting percentage in the second to win, 25-19.
SET 3: Creighton had its largest lead of the match in the third set at 12-6. The Longhorns comeback was sparked by a 6-0 run off junior transfer's Anja Kujundzic's back-to-back aces and helped Texas regain the lead at 17-16. Again, Stafford, Spears and Vander Wal registered four kills each to help Texas sweep Creighton, 3-0, in its first match of the season with a final set win of 26-24.
The Longhorns will face No. 8 Wisconsin on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT for its final match of the Opening Spike Classic. The match will be streamed live on Big Ten Network at the Kohl Center.
