Scottie Scheffler wins The American Express
01.25.2026 | Men's Golf
Scheffler moves past Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kite for most career PGA TOUR wins by a Longhorn with his 20th victory.
LA QUINTA, Calif. — Former University of Texas star Scottie Scheffler carded a 6-under-par 66 on Sunday afternoon to coast to a four-stroke victory at The American Express at La Quinta Country Club. Scheffler recorded his first win of the year in his opening appearance of the 2026 season and his 20th career PGA TOUR victory.
With his 20th career PGA TOUR win, Scheffler moved past both Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kite for most career PGA TOUR victories by a Longhorn. Crenshaw and Kite each recorded 19 career PGA TOUR wins. In addition, Scheffler's 20th career TOUR win grants him a lifetime exemption on the PGA TOUR.
With the victory, Scheffler becomes the first player since Rory McIlroy at the 2021 CJ CUP to win 20 times on the PGA TOUR and the 40th individual in history to accomplish the feat. Winning 20 times now in 151 career starts, Scheffler trails only Tiger Woods (95) and Jack Nicklaus (127) as the third-quickest ever to reach 20 TOUR victories. The 29-year-old Scheffler also joins Woods and Nicklaus as the only players to win 20 PGA TOUR events and four major championships before the age of 30.
All 20 of Scheffler's TOUR victories have come in a four-year span. Scheffler also surpassed the $100 million mark in career winnings, trailing only Woods and McIlroy.
Scheffler registered a four-round score of 27-under 261 (63-64-68-66) to finish four strokes ahead of a group of four golfers that included Jason Day, Ryan Gerard, Matt McCarty and Andrew Putnam at 23-under. Scheffler began the day in a tie for second at 21-under, just one stroke behind Si Woo Kim at 22-under. After a birdie-bogey start to his round, Scheffler carded birdies on holes 4, 5, 7, 8, 11, 12, 14 and 16 on Sunday to cruise to the win.
Scheffler's win on Sunday marked the 113th official PGA TOUR victory accomplished by 17 different individuals in the 99-year history of the Texas Men's Golf program.
