Bennett, Comegys, Derbez Torres and Simmons lead the Longhorns to a 4.5-1.5 victory in Wednesday’s championship match.
ST ANDREWS, Scotland — The No. 8 Texas Men's Golf team posted a 4.5-1.5 win against the University of St Andrews on Wednesday in the championship match of the St Andrews Links Collegiate on the historic Old Course at St Andrews. Junior Daniel Bennett, fifth-year Matt Comegys, junior Eduardo Derbez Torres and sophomore Brooks Simmons earned individual match victories for the Longhorns during Wednesday's win.
The tournament utilized a specialized Medal Match Play format that combined elements of both stroke and match play. It featured six-player teams competing in head-to-head singles matches. Instead of standard match play where holes are won or lost hole-by-hole, the total 18-hole gross stroke-play score was calculated for each player. The player with the lowest total score over 18 holes wins that singular match point for the team.
Bennett gave Texas an early 1-0 with an impressive 11-up win over Alex Timms. Comegys put the second point on the board for the Longhorns by rallying late to post a 2-up victory against Jamie Henshaw, before St. Andrews answered when Ollie George claimed a 2-up win over senior Jack Gilbert.
Derbez Torres earned a dominant 9-up victory against Theo Anderson-Gannon to increase Texas' advantage to 3-1, before Simmons clinched the overall dual-match win with a 1-up victory over Spencer Turtz capped by a birdie on the finishing 18th hole. The final match of the afternoon resulted in a draw between freshman Sterling Hurd and Luca Suarez.
The Longhorns, who earned the top seed in match play by virtue of their 19-stroke margin during the 36-hole stroke-play portion of the event on Monday and Tuesday, recorded their second team title of the 2026-27 season. Bennett claimed medalist honors during the stroke-play event with a two-round score of even-par 140 (64-76).
This marked the final team competition for Texas during the fall season. The Longhorns will return to the course at the Southwestern Intercollegiate on Jan. 25-26, 2026, at Westlake Village, Calif.

Bennett increased his advantage to 9-up through 10 holes and 11-up through 13 holes. He maintained that margin over the final five holes.
