The Longhorns rallied to advance to the semifinals of the tournament for the second-straight year and third time in the last four.
Waco, Texas – No. 7 Texas Men's Tennis topped No. 5 TCU, 4-3, in the quarterfinals of the ITA National Indoor Championships in Waco on Saturday. The win sends the Longhorns to the semifinals of the tournament for the second-straight year and third time in the last four.
For the second-straight match, the Longhorns found themselves in a 2-0 deficit after dropping the doubles point via matches at Nos. 1 and 2, along with the first singles contest at No. 5. However, they again responded with four singles wins, starting with a top-five victory for senior No. 10 Sebastian Gorzny at No. 1, and a win by freshman Kalin Ivanovski at No. 2 to even it, 2-2.
The Horned Frogs briefly retook the lead with a win at No. 3, but Texas completed the comeback with wins by sophomores No. 51 Sebastian Eriksson at No. 4 and Oliver Ojakaar at No. 6 to clinch it. The match for Ojakaar was just his second singles match in the 2025-26 year with the other coming in fall play, making it first in a dual match since March 2 of last year.
After TCU won doubles, senior Jonah Braswell fell to Albert Pedrico, 6-2, 6-2. At that point, Gorzny began the rally with a 7-6 (2), 6-4 win over No. 5 Duncan Chan at No. 1. Ivanovski then produced efficient second and third sets to overcome dropping a first-set tiebreaker to No. 49 Cosme Rolland De Ravel, 6-7 (6), 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2.
Freshman Abel Forger had won a first-set tiebreaker in his match against Cooper Woestendick at No. 3, and even though Forger had a late break chance in the third set, Woestendick was able to hold and later broke, himself, for the 6-7 (3), 6-2, 7-5 win, retaking the lead for TCU, 3-2.
Eriksson won his first set and had a second-set tiebreaker against Oliver Bonding, and although Bonding emerged with that, Eriksson responded with a deuce-point break in the final game of the third set for a 6-4, 6-7 (2), 6-4 win.
That left it to Ojakaar, whose match against Roger Pascual at No. 6 had started later than the other singles contests with only five courts being used for singles. Ojakaar had a solid 6-3 win in his first set, and although the second set was pushed to a tiebreaker, he emerged victorious in that, 7-6 (5), to send his teammates streaming onto his court.
Earlier in doubles, Ivanovski and Forger had dropped their match to Bonding and Woestendick, 6-3, at No. 1, while Gorzny and freshman Lucas Marionneu did the same to No. 22 Chan and Rolland De Ravel at No. 2. The match at No. 3 was left unfinished with the No. 27 duo of Ojakaar and Eriksson trailing Pedrico and Filip Apltauer, 4-5, with the match on serve when play halted.
Texas will next transition from Waco to Dallas for the semifinals and play the winner of No. 3 Wake Forest and No. 19 Baylor on Monday at 6:30 p.m. CT.
