Longhorns secure second run-rule win in first four games
AUSTIN, Texas — No. 3 Texas scored a dozen unanswered tallies across the final three innings, mounting a 14-4 run-rule victory over Lamar at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Tuesday night.
With the result, the Longhorns (4-0) earned a run-rule win for the second time in their first four games.
After trailing the Cardinals (2-2) by a pair of runs in the middle of the fifth, Texas posted a six-spot in the bottom half to pull in front, 8-4. The Longhorns sent 12 batters to the plate in the frame, delivering three extra-base hits.
Following catcher Carson Tinney's solo shot in the sixth, Texas added five more tallies in the game-sealing seventh. Left fielder Maddox Monsour punctuated the evening with a bases-clearing three-run triple.
Tinney led the Longhorns' offensive outburst, as the junior smacked his first two homers in burnt orange, reached safely four times and scored three runs.
The Notre Dame transfer's 116-mph blast put Texas on the scoreboard in the second. Meanwhile, his 423-foot sixth-inning jack padded the Longhorns' 9-4 advantage.
Third baseman Temo Becerra was also on base four times, registering a go-head two-run triple in the decisive fifth. Beccera notched an RBI in the early innings, recording his first multi-hit performance on The Forty Acres.
Overall, the Longhorns outhit the Cardinals, 13-6. Texas totaled six extra-base hits in the victory.
In his collegiate debut, righty Sam Cozart (1-0) logged the win. Cozart tossed four innings of one-run baseball, collecting four strikeouts. The freshman came on in relief after veteran hurlers Jason Flores and Ethan Walker combined to pitch the first three frames.
Lamar reliever Joshua Shimmin (0-1) was tagged with the loss. Shimmin surrendered four runs in one inning of work.
Up next, Texas turns its attention to Michigan State on Friday. The three-game set begins at 6:30 p.m.
