Austin – Texas Men's Tennis swept the SEC weekly awards as senior Sebastian Gorzny was named Athlete of the Week, and Kalin Ivanovski was chosen Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday. It marks the second weekly SEC honor for Gorzny this season and in his career, and the first for Ivanovski.
The duo helped Texas to the program's first ITA Indoors National Championship with four wins over No. 8 Texas A&M, No. 5 TCU, No. 19 Baylor and No. 2 Ohio State on the way to the title.
Gorzny went 3-0 in singles with two top-15 victories and another top-50 win, all at No. 1. He also went 2-2 in doubles, including a tiebreaker win over the nation's No. 1 doubles team. In the round of 16 against Texas A&M, Gorzny's win over No. 42 Theo Papamalamis (4-6, 6-3, 6-2) provided Texas its first lead at 3-2 on the way to a 4-2 win. Versus TCU in the quarterfinals, Gorzny was first off the singles court with a straight-sets win over No. 5 Duncan Chan (7-6 (2), 7-4) to cut the Horned Frogs' lead to 2-1 before Texas won, 4-3.
In the semifinals match against Baylor, Gorzny and freshman partner Lucas Marionneau clinched the doubles point at No. 2 with a 7-5 win as the Longhorns swept the Bears, 4-0. Gorzny was close to a singles win over No. 17 Devin Badenhorst, but a second-set tiebreaker forced a third set and the match was unfinished. He produced his best on the biggest stage in the final against No. 2 Ohio State, as he and Marionneau were first off the doubles court with a 7-6 (5) win over No. 1 Brandon Carpico and Nikita Filin. It helped the Longhorns win the doubles point with all three matches going to tiebreakers. He then regained the lead for Texas at 2-1 when he topped No. 13 Aidan Kim (6-4, 6-4) as part of the title winning 4-2 victory over the Buckeyes.
Gorzny is now 15-3 overall in singles this year, including 9-1 in dual match play with an eight-match winning streak, all at No. 1. He is 11-7 in doubles and 7-4 in dual matches.
Ivanovski posted a 3-0 record in singles play, all against ranked opponents at No. 2. He also went 1-1 in doubles, along with an unfinished tiebreaker match against the nation's No. 7 pair, all at No. 1. In the quarterfinals against TCU, Ivanovski defeated No. 49 Cosme Rolland De Ravel, narrowly dropping a first-set tiebreaker but posting decisive second and third sets, 6-7 (6), 6-1, 6-2, to even the overall match at 2-2 on the way to a 4-3 win. Against Baylor in the semifinals, Ivanovski and partner Abel Forger were first off the doubles court with a 6-3 win. He was then second off in singles, giving the Longhorns a 3-0 lead en route to a 4-0 sweep.
In the final against No. 2 Ohio State, Ivanovski and Forger were unfinished and trailed by just a point in a tight tiebreaker against No. 7 Alex Okonkwo and Alexander Bernard in a doubles point that Texas won where all three matches went to tiebreakers. However, his biggest moment was being the clinching singles victory when he topped No. 22 Preston Stearns in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4, to deliver the title.
Ivanovski has missed several matches due to injury, including the round of 16 against Texas A&M, but he is now 4-2 in dual match singles and 3-3 in doubles.
