Longhorns tally double-digit runs for sixth straight game for first time since 1940
SAN MARCOS, Texas — Casey Borba mounted his first career multi-homer effort and drove in five runs, as No. 2 Texas topped Texas State, 15-4, at Bobcat Ballpark on Tuesday night.
Borba's performance led the Longhorns (16-0) to double-digit tallies for their sixth consecutive game, accomplishing the feat for the first time since 1940. Texas' 16-0 ledger matches its best start to a season in 21 years.
The junior crushed a 477-foot three-run jack in the third before smacking a seventh-inning solo shot, which marked his fourth home run in as many games. Borba reached safely five times, adding a bases-loaded walk to register five RBI for the second straight contest.
Anthony Pack Jr. and Temo Becerra also left the yard in the win, combining to plate five runs. Pack powered a two-run homer, while Becerra blasted a three-RBI round-tripper to cap off the offensive onslaught.
Overall, Texas scored in six different frames, notching a co-season-high 15 hits. Eight of the nine starters logged a knock, with five players posting multi-hit efforts.
The Longhorns raced out to an early 7-0 lead, highlighted by Borba and Pack Jr.'s round-homers in the third and fourth frames, respectively.
Dawson Park's three-run jack pulled the Bobcats (12-3) back within four, but Texas totaled seven runs across the final two innings.
Adrian Rodriguez, Jayden Duplantier and Josh Livingston teamed up to put up a four-spot in the eighth, setting the stage for Becerra in the ninth.
Ethan Walker (1-0) earned the win in relief of starter Sam Cozart, who yielded three runs over 4 2/3 frames. The reigning SEC Freshman of the Week struck out four in his third career start.
Texas State starter Titan Targac (1-3) was chased after tossing 35 pitches in the opening inning. Targac only recorded two outs, surrendering a pair of runs on two hits and two walks.
Following their first true road contest of the season, the Longhorns return home to open their Southeastern Conference slate. Texas begins league play with a three-game set against Ole Miss. The series opener is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Friday.
