Stewart’s two home runs lift No. 3 Softball past East Texas A&M

Texas run-ruled East Texas A&M, 10-1, in five innings to move its win streak to 21 games.
AUSTIN, Texas – Ignited off the bat of junior catcher Katie Stewart, No. 3 Texas Softball (23-1) run-ruled East Texas A&M, 10-1 (five innings), Wednesday evening at McCombs Field.
With the victory, Texas advanced its win streak to 21 games in a row – the second-longest win streak in program history and longest since winning a program-record 24-straight in 2006.
The Longhorns improve to 23-1 overall and 11-0 at home. It marked Texas' 12th run-rule victory of the season, including its fifth-consecutive at home. It was UT's 12th game scoring 10-or-more runs on the season. Texas' pitching staff has not allowed more than two runs in each of its last 12 games.
Stewart notched her third career multi-home run game after launching a season-high two home runs on the night. Stewart smacked a solo shot to left in the fourth and followed with a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth for the walk-off, run-rule victory. The Frankfort, Ill., product has homered a team-high 14 times this season. Stewart's five RBI were a season high as well. Senior second baseman Leighann Goode finished 2-for-2 with an RBI single and walk. Junior center fielder Kayden Henry reached in all three plate appearances after hitting an RBI single and reaching twice via walk. Senior right fielder Ashton Maloney reached in all three of her plate appearances after laying down a bunt single and drawing two walks.
Sophomore RHP Cambria Salmon (4-0) picked up the win in her seventh start of the season. Salmon threw 3.0 scoreless innings, curtailing East Texas A&M to just one hit while punching out five. Salmon retired nine of 10 batters she faced. Sophomore LHP Brenlee Gonzales entered the game in the third for 2.0 innings, giving up one run on one hit, striking out two and walking three. Salmon re-entered the game in the fifth and retired the side.
In the bottom of the first, senior designated player Reese Atwood's sac fly to left scored Henry for a 1-0 lead.
Texas tacked on two runs in the second frame. Henry drew a bases-loaded walk and then senior left fielder Kaiah Altmeyer was struck by a pitch in the back to score a third run. In the third, Henry cracked a bases-loaded single to left field to score junior shortstop Viviana Martinez, and Goode followed suit with an RBI single through the left side to increase the lead to 5-0.
East Texas A&M cut the deficit to 5-1 with a two-out RBI single to right center in the top of the fourth. In the bottom half, Stewart connected on her first home run of the game – a solo shot – to give Texas a 6-1 edge.
With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, Stewart called game with a grand slam for the 10-1 run-rule win.
