No. 4 Men’s Golf moves up to sixth after day two at Southern Highlands Collegiate

LAS VEGAS, Nevada — The No. 4 Texas Men's Golf team carded a 1-over 289 on Monday to climb into sixth place after the second day of the Southern Highlands Collegiate at Southern Highlands Golf Club. Senior Christiaan Maas posted a 4-under 68 and is in second place in the individual standings at 6-under overall through 36 holes.
Texas is playing without sophomore All-American Daniel Bennett, who will be competing at the PGA TOUR's Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard later this week (March 5-8) in Orlando. During Monday's second round, the Longhorns counted scores from Maas (4-under 68), sophomore Eduardo Derbez Torres (1-over 73), senior Luke Potter (2-over 74) and senior Tommy Morrison (2-over 74) for a team score of 1-over 289.
No. 1 Virginia holds a two-stroke lead in the team standings at 15-under 561 (277-284), while No. 7 Auburn is second at 13-under 563 (282-281). Washington is third at 2-under 574 (283-291). The Longhorns (290-289), which began play on Monday in eighth place, jumped two spots on the team leaderboard and are just five strokes out of third place entering Tuesday's final round. The 15-team field features nine squads in the top 25 and five in the top 10 of the final fall Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches poll (Oct. 31).
Paul Chang of Virginia owns a one-stroke lead after the opening 36 holes with a two-round score of 7-under 137 (66-71). Maas is in solo second at 6-under 138 (70-68), while Virginia's pair of Josh Duangmanee (72-67) and Ben James (68-71) along with Jack Turner of Florida (68-71) are tied for third at 5-under 139.
The Southern Highland Collegiate concludes with a final round on Tuesday, March 3. Texas will be paired with Illinois and Florida during Tuesday's final round which begins at 11:50 a.m. CT (9:50 a.m. PT) on hole 1.
The Lineup
- Senior Christiaan Maas fired a 4-under 68 on Monday and is in second place in the individual standings with a 36-hole total of 6-under 138 (70-68). Maas recorded seven birdies (holes 1, 3, 8, 9, 11, 13 and 16) during his second round.
- Sophomore Eduardo Derbez Torres carded a 1-over 73 in his second round and is tied for 35th with a two-round score of 3-over 147 (74-73). Derbez Torres tallied three birdies (holes 4, 5 and 16) on Monday.
- Senior Luke Potter registered a 2-over 74 on Monday and is tied for 29th with a 36-hole total of 2-over 146 (72-74). Potter posted one birdie (hole 5) and 14 pars during his second round.
- Senior Tommy Morrison fired a 2-over 74 in his second round and is tied for 43rd with a two-round score of 4-over 148 (74-74). Morrison tallied three birdies (holes 12, 13 and 18) on Monday.
- Graduate Matt Comegys posted a 9-over 81 on Monday and is tied for 76th with a 36-hole total of 13-over 157 (76-81).
- Competing as an individual, freshman Adam Villanueva carded a 2-over 74 in his second round and is tied for 50th with a two-round score of 5-over 149 (75-74). Starting on hole 10, Villanueva recorded a pair of birdies (holes 18 and 6) and an eagle on the par-five 3rd hole on Monday.
