WACO, Texas – No. 2 Texas Softball (28-1) blanked Baylor, 11-0, in five innings Saturday night at Getterman Stadium. Texas increased its program record win streak to 26 games, which also doubles as the longest streak in the nation.
With the victory, Texas boosted its overall record to 28-1 (6-0 SEC) and 7-0 on the road. The Horns clinched their fourth-straight run-rule victory with all four coming against a Power Four opponent. Texas has accumulated 16 run-rule wins.
Texas leads the all-time series vs. Baylor, 44-26, and has won seven in a row.
Junior RHP Teagan Kavan went the distance in her third complete game shutout of the season. Across 5.0 innings of work, Kavan struck out 10 and restrained the Bears to just two hits while working around two hit batters. Kavan did not allow a walk. The West Des Moines, Iowa, native posted two 1-2-3 innings. It was Kavan's team-leading ninth complete game and fifth double-digit strikeout outing. Backing up Kavan, Texas' defense played flawless and did not record an error for the sixth-consecutive game.
Offensively, the Longhorns combined for 11 runs on nine hits while drawing four walks. Of Texas' nine hits, five went for extra bases. UT plated nine of its 11 runs in the second. Senior pinch hitter Kaydee Bennett hit a two-run, inside the park home run in the top of the fifth.
Junior center fielder Kayden Henry went 2-for-3 with two RBI, two doubles and a stolen base – her third multi-RBI outing in a row. Henry has amassed a multi-hit performance in four of her last five games. Freshman designated player Hannah Wells also drove in a pair of runs on a double in the second. Senior right fielder Ashton Maloney roped a two-RBI double. Senior second baseman Leighann Goode and junior first baseman Katie Stewart each connected on RBI singles.
Both teams put up zeroes in the first, but Texas' offense erupted in its nine-run second frame. Henry put Texas on the board on her two-RBI double to right field and then Goode followed suit with an RBI single up the middle to plate Henry to position Texas with a 3-0 lead. Henry scored on a double steal for a 4-0 lead. Then, Stewart blooped a single to shallow right field to push Goode home. Wells leveled a two-RBI double down the left field line to score Stewart and Reese Atwood, stretching the lead to 7-0. Maloney then clobbered a two-RBI double down the left field line for a 9-0 advantage.
With two outs in the top of the fifth, Bennett shattered a two-run, inside the park home run to left center for the 11-0 lead. Texas' communications staff is researching how many inside the park home runs have been hit in program history.
