The Longhorns won their 27th-consecutive game with a 3-2 win on the road at Texas State Wednesday night.
SAN MARCOS, Texas – Reese Atwood and Katie Stewart's back-to-back solo home runs in the sixth inning lifted No. 1 Texas Softball (29-1) over Texas State (20-13), 3-2, Wednesday night at Bobcat Softball Stadium.
The Longhorns stretched their program-best win streak to 27 games, enhancing their overall record to 29-1 on the season and 8-0 on the road.
Junior RHP Teagan Kavan (13-0) shut the door on the Bobcats after tossing 3.1 scoreless innings of relief to earn the win. Kavan did not allow a hit and fanned five while working around two walks and a hit batter. The West Des Moines, Iowa, native took over in the circle in the bottom of the fourth with the bases loaded and two outs. Kavan then struck out Texas State's Keely Williams to get Texas out of the jam. Kavan controlled the Texas State offense after retiring eight of the next nine batters she faced. Kavan has not allowed a run in her last 9.0 innings.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Texas State went ahead 2-0, scoring on a fielder's choice and errant throw with the bases juiced.
Texas answered back with a run in the top of the fourth. Atwood started the inning and reached via errant throw, advancing to second base on the play. Stewart then drew a walk to put two runners on base for the Horns. With one away, Viviana Martinez hit an infield single that forced Texas State's shortstop to dive into the 5-6 hole. The shortstop attempted to make a play at third base but threw the ball away and allowed Taylor Anderson (pinch running for Atwood) to score to trim the lead to 2-1.
Back-to-back solo home runs by Atwood and Stewart to begin the sixth put Texas in front permanently, 3-2. It was Atwood's 12th home run of the season, and it was Stewart's team-leading 16th home run of the season.
