Larson notches game-winning hit in 4-3 come-from-behind victory
AUSTIN, Texas — Ashton Larson delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning, lifting No. 2 Texas to a 4-3 victory over No. 8 Oklahoma at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Friday night.
Larson's game-winning hit punctuated the Longhorns' comeback, as Texas (22-4, 6-2 SEC) scored four unanswered runs in as many frames to rally for the series-securing victory.
With the Sooners (19-7, 4-4 SEC) three outs away from a win in the ninth, Ethan Mendoza tripled to the center field fence off of Oklahoma closer Jackson Cleveland to lead off the frame.
Two pitches later, Carson Tinney ripped a single up the middle to ignite the season-high 7,990 fans in attendance and level the contest, 3-3.
In the seventh, the Longhorns chipped away at the Sooners' three-run advantage.
Texas drew four straight walks to open the inning, capped off by Josh Livingston's bases-loaded free pass to put the Longhorns on the board.
After Oklahoma got a forceout at the plate, Tinney launched a towering 358-foot sacrifice fly to the warning track in left to bring Texas within a run.
For the second straight evening, the Longhorns' pitching staff kept the Sooners in check.
Following the largest shutout win in Red River Rivalry history,
Luke Harrison and Sam Cozart teamed up to hold Oklahoma to just three runs on five hits.
The duo combined to retire 15 of the final 16 batters, limiting the Sooners to one baserunner after the fifth.
Cozart (5-0) faced the minimum through three hitless frames, striking out three in relief.
Meanwhile, Harrison matched a career-best with seven innings, scattering three runs. The graduate student punched out six.
In the victory, Texas mounted a season-best 12 walks, pushing the visitors to throw 211 pitches across 9 1/3 frames.
The Longhorns will look to sweep Oklahoma for the first time in 12 years on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
