The Longhorns clinched the series sweep with a 5-2 victory over the Gamecocks on Sunday.
COLUMBIA, S.C. – No. 3 Texas Softball (22-1) secured a ranked series sweep on the road after defeating No. 24 South Carolina, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon at Carolina Softball Stadium.
Texas improves to 22-1 overall and 3-0 in SEC play. With the victory, Texas clinched its 20th win in a row – the second-longest win streak in program history and the longest since winning a program-record 24-straight games in 2006. Texas is 9-1 against ranked opponents this season.
Making her first career SEC start, true freshman RHP Hannah Wells (3-1) earned the win after limiting South Carolina to five hits across 5.2 innings pitched with two strikeouts. Wells worked around four walks and forced three groundout double plays. Wells twirled five scoreless frames before the Gamecocks added an unearned run in the sixth on an errant throw. Sophomore RHP Cambria Salmon entered the game in the bottom of the sixth with the bases loaded and two outs and forced a groundout to junior shortstop Viviana Martinez to escape the jam. Salmon retired back-to-back batters to begin the seventh before giving up a two-out solo home run, cutting the Longhorns' lead to 5-2. Salmon forced a groundout to shortstop to end the game and seal her first save of the season.
Junior center fielder Kayden Henry powered Texas offensively after launching a two-run home run in the third – her third of the season. Henry also scored a run in the fourth. Senior catcher Reese had a multi-RBI outing after hammering a two-RBI single in the fourth. Senior left fielder Kaiah Altmeyer also bashed an RBI double to center in the fourth. Senior right fielder Ashton Maloney, junior first baseman Katie Stewart and freshman pitcher Hannah Wells joined the hits column with a base hit apiece.
After two scoreless innings, Henry's two-run home run in the third gave Texas a 2-0 lead. The Longhorns added three more runs in the fourth, beginning with Altmeyer's RBI double to center to score Henry from second. Atwood then cracked a two-RBI single to center to score Leighann Goode and Altmeyer, stretching the UT lead to 5-0.
