Tinney's game-winning blast caps off largest comeback victory in four years
AUSTIN, Texas — With No. 4 Texas down to its final two outs, Carson Tinney launched a walk-off two-run homer to lift the Longhorns to a 15-14 win over Sam Houston at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Tuesday night.
Tinney's second home run of the contest helped the Longhorns (33-9) erase their third different deficit of the evening, including a once six-run hole.
The 463-foot game-winning blast — Texas' fourth round-tripper of the night — capped off the Longhorns' largest comeback victory since rallying for a 12-8 win against Oklahoma on April 3, 2022.
In the top of the ninth, the Bearkats (20-25) regained the lead on Kirby Orth's two-run shot, propelling the visitors to a 14-12 edge.
After Ashton Larson was hit by a pitch to open the bottom half, pinch runner Jayden Duplantier swiped second.
Sam Houston right-hander Noah Kendrick (1-2) bounced back with a strikeout to flip the order to Aiden Robbins. Robbins registered an RBI single to bring Texas within a run, setting the stage for Tinney's heroics two pitches later.
The inning prior, the Longhorns pulled level for the second time, as Temo Becerra delivered a run-scoring base hit to plate Anthony Pack Jr. Becerra's third knock of the evening tied the tilt, 12-12.
Despite trailing by as many as six, Texas grabbed its first advantage in the middle innings.
The Longhorns notched eight unanswered tallies in the fifth and sixth, highlighted by Casey Borba's three-run jack, Robbins' game-tying 413-foot solo shot and Ethan Mendoza's go-ahead two-RBI double.
Robbins' team-best 18th home run matched Scott Bryant (1989), Max Belyeu (2024) and Jalin Flores (2024) for the eight-most by a Texas player in a season.
Meanwhile, Mendoza's extra-base hit pushed the Longhorns in front, 11-9.
In a contest that featured five lead changes, the Bearkats raced out to an 8-2 cushion, punctuated by Wes Baker's third-inning grand slam. Once Texas gain control in the sixth, Baker followed with a go-ahead three-run blast the very next frame.
The three-hour, 58-minute marathon featured 14 different pitchers, with left-hander Kade Bing (1-1) earning the victory.
The Longhorns continue their five-game homestand against No. 10 Mississippi State on Friday. The series opener is set for 6:30 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
