Longhorns match program record for most strikeouts in nine-inning game

AUSTIN, Texas — No. 4 Texas totaled 19 strikeouts, as the Longhorns secured the series opener against No. 10 Mississippi State, 3-1, at UFCU Disch Falk Field on Friday night.

For the second time in less than two weeks, Texas (34-9, 14-7 SEC) tied the most punchouts in a nine-inning game in program history, matching its performances against Southwestern Louisiana on March 18, 1988, and Alabama on April 18, 2026.

Ace Dylan Volantis (7-0) registered a co-career-best 12 strikeouts and scattered three singles across six scoreless innings. Volantis threw 107 pitches, which marked the most by a Longhorn this season.

After the Bulldogs (35-11, 13-9 SEC) tallied a two-out infield hit in the first, the 6-foot-6, 220-pound left-hander retired 10 of the next 11 batters he faced. Volantis capped off that stretch by striking out the side on only 10 pitches in the fourth.

The sophomore stranded a pair in the fifth before notching his 12^th punchout in the sixth to conclude his career evening.

Meanwhile, Haiden Leffew collected three strikeouts over 1 1/3 innings, with Texas' lone blemish coming on a leadoff solo homer in the eighth. Thomas Burns recorded the final two outs of the frame by fanning Vytas Valincius and inducing an inning-ending ground out.

Sam Cozart (7) punched out the side in the ninth to punctuate the Longhorns' historic night.

The Longhorns were able to push across three runs off Mississippi State starter Tomas Valincius (7-2).

Ashton Larson broke the early stalemate with an RBI ground out in the second.

Texas tacked on two more in the fifth, capitalizing on back-to-back run-scoring singles from Aiden Robbins and Anthony Pack Jr.

The Longhorns will look to clinch their league-leading seventh SEC series win on Saturday. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
