No. 3 Softball drops Game 1 of NCAA Austin Super Regional

Texas is in a must-win situation to keep season alive.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 3 Texas Softball fell in its NCAA Austin Super Regional opener vs. Arizona State, 4-1, Friday night at McCombs Field.
The Longhorns will look to even the Super Regional at 7 p.m. CT Saturday, May 23. Texas is now 45-11 overall and 6-1 in the postseason. The loss snapped Texas' seven-game win streak, which was the second-longest of the season.
Junior RHP Teagan Kavan (24-5) made her 30th start in the circle for the Horns this season. Kavan went 5.0 frames and gave up three earned runs on eight hits while fanning five batters. Kavan worked around two walks. The West Des Moines, Iowa, native sat down the first five batters she faced on the night and threw 15-straight pitches for strikes to start the game. Senior RHP Citlaly Gutierrez (8-3) tossed 2.0 hitless innings of relief after taking over in the circle to start the sixth. Gutierrez retired six-of-seven batters faced, allowing one runner to reach via hit by pitch in the seventh.
Arizona State struck first in the third with a two-out single up the middle for a 1-0 lead.
Texas evened the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth thanks to freshman designated player Hannah Wells' one-out, solo home run to center field. It was Wells' 15th home run of the season. The Coahoma, Texas, native owns the program's freshman home run record after surpassing Katie Stewart's previous record of 13 set in 2024.
The fifth inning doomed the Longhorns as Arizona State plated three runs beginning with a one-out, two-run single up the middle to regain a 3-1 lead. ASU added a fourth run on a one-run double to left center with two outs.
Four Longhorns tallied base hits on the night. Wells, who blasted her 15th home run of the season, highlighted Texas' offense. Junior center fielder Kayden Henry, junior shortstop Viviana Martinez and senior right fielder Ashton Maloney also registered base knocks.
