Longhorns finish 9-2 in midweek contests

AUSTIN, Texas — Carson Tinney smacked a go-ahead grand slam in the eighth, propelling No. 4 Texas to an 11-8 win over UTSA at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Tuesday night.

The Longhorns (36-10) rallied from a pair of deficits, trailing the Roadrunners (33-15) by as many as three runs in their 12^th comeback win of the year.

Tinney's 483-foot blast marked his second career grand slam and Texas' third of the season. He has now hit 17 home runs, which is tied for the 11^th-most in a campaign by a Longhorn ever.

The junior's heroics punctuated the Longhorns' ninth midweek victory in 11 games.

In the win, Maddox Monsour also launched his first career homer. Monsour's 432-foot two-run jack leveled the score, 7-7, in the third.

The freshman was one of four Texas players to finish with a multi-RBI performance, alongside Tinney, Ashton Larson and Casey Borba.

Larson and Borba keyed the Longhorns' four-run first, as Texas jumped in front in the opening frame.

After Ethan Mendoza drew a bases-loaded free pass, Larson mounted a sacrifice fly to push the Longhorns up, 2-0.

Borba followed by ripping a two-run single through the left side to cap off the four-spot.

UTSA scored seven unanswered tallies, highlighted by a six-run third. Diego Diaz sparked the Roadrunners, socking a second-inning solo shot. Diaz went 4-for-4 with two RBI, delivering a go-ahead double in the seventh.

Meanwhile, Garrett Gruell bookended the outburst, rocketing a pinch-hit three-run homer in the third.

Brody Walls (2-0) earned the win in relief. Walls struck out a career-best five across a co-career-long 3 2/3 innings of one-run baseball.

The freshman handed the ball off to Thomas Burns (5), who secured the save by retiring the side on nine pitches in the ninth.

Following its five-game homestand, Texas hits the road to face Tennessee at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. The three-game set begins at 5:30 p.m. CT / 6:30 p.m. ET on Friday.
