Longhorns use nine-spot in third to beat Bulldogs, 11-6
AUSTIN, Texas — No. 4 Texas erupted for a season-best nine-spot in the third inning, flipping an early deficit into an 11-6 win over No. 10 Mississippi State at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Sunday afternoon.
With the victory, the Longhorns (35-10, 15-8 SEC) notched their co-leading seventh SEC series win.
Mississippi State (36-12, 14-10 SEC) scored five times in the opening frame, but Texas totaled 10 unanswered tallies, highlighted by the nine-run third.
In the decisive inning, the Longhorns sent 13 batters to the plate, as all nine starting position players reached consecutively to begin the outburst.
After three straight walks, Carson Tinney was hit with a full-count offering to put Texas on the board. Then, Anthony Pack Jr. followed with a two-run single to cut the hole to 5-3.
On four pitches, Ethan Mendoza drew a free pass to reload the bases, setting the stage for Adrian Rodriguez. Rodriguez ripped a game-tying two-RBI base knock to erase the 5-0 deficit.
With the rubber game tied, Temo Becerra delivered the go-ahead double, pushing the Longhorns in front, 6-5. Casey Borba traded places with Becerra, padding the crooked number with a two-run extra-base hit.
Aiden Robbins punctuated the nine-spot with an RBI single. Robbins' base knock marked the 200th hit of his collegiate career.
With Texas in control, 9-5, in the fourth, Becerra added to the advantage with his second run-scoring double in as many frames. The redshirt junior finished with a team-best six hits across the weekend.
The Longhorns cruised the rest of the way, with Texas' arms allowing just one hit after the fourth.
Despite a 41-pitch first, Luke Harrison (5-2) struck out nine across five innings. Harrison held the Bulldogs to just three hits, retiring 13 of the final 15 hitters he faced.
Relievers Haiden Leffew, Brett Crossland and Sam Cozart combined to limit the visitors to only one run over the last four frames.
Mississippi State hurler Jack Gleason (3-1) was tagged with the loss. Gleason surrendered four runs and failed to record an out in the third.
Up next, the Longhorns close out their five-game homestand against UTSA on Tuesday. Texas' final midweek contest of the year is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
