Longhorns finish tied for fifth nationally
OMAHA, Neb. — The University of Texas baseball team's 2026 campaign came to a close Tuesday evening, as the six-ranked Longhorns dropped a 2-0 pitchers' duel to No. 3 Georgia at Charles Schwab Field.
Texas concluded the season with a 46-15 mark and advanced to the Men's College World Series for the 39th time in program history.
In his last collegiate start, graduate student Luke Harrison (6-4) totaled a career-high 11 strikeouts across 5 2/3 innings of one-run baseball. Harrison's final punchout pushed the southpaw over the century mark for the year.
Harrison, Ruger Riojas (120) and Dylan Volantis (135) became the first trio of Longhorns to record 100 strikeouts in a single season since Preston Watson (102), Kirk Dressendorfer (134) and Eric Stone (140) accomplished the feat in 1988.
The 6-foot-2, 220-pound left-hander punched out eight of the first 10 batters he faced and reached double-digit after four frames. Harrison took a no-hit bid into the fifth before surrendering a two-out RBI double to Tre Phelps.
Sam Cozart entered with the bases loaded and two away in the sixth. Cozart struck out Kolby Branch to escape the threat.
The NCBWA National Freshman Pitcher of the Year limited the Bulldogs (53-13) to only one run on three hits the rest of the way. Cozart collected six strikeouts, capping off his historic rookie campaign with a 1.72 ERA.
Despite the Longhorns holding one of the best offenses in college baseball to a co-season-low two runs, Georgia earned its spot in the semifinals on the backs of Dylan Vigue and Justin Byrd (6-2).
Vigue and Byrd combined to toss a four-hit shutout, becoming just the second team to blank Texas in 2026. The pair of right-handers scattered four hits and tallied 12 strikeouts.
The Longhorns finished tied for fifth nationally.
