No. 12 Men’s Golf claims Jackson T. Stephens Cup crown

Derbez Torres, Bennett and Harper lead the Longhorns to a 3-1 victory over Texas A&M in championship match.
FRISCO, Texas — The No. 12 Texas Men's Golf team posted a 3-1 win against Texas A&M on Wednesday in the championship match of the Jackson T. Stephens Cup at PGA Frisco Fields Ranch East. Juniors Eduardo Derbez Torres and Daniel Bennett and freshman Brooks Harper earned the three individual points for the Longhorns during Wednesday's victory.
Derbez Torres gave Texas an early 1-0 advantage with a 4&2 win over Kris Kuvaas. The Aggies evened the match score at 1-1 after Landon Ashcraft claimed a 6&4 victory against sophomore Adam Villanueva.
All square in his match through 17 holes, Bennett won the 18th hole with a birdie to post a 1-up win over Aaron Pounds. Harper then provided the clinching point with a decisive 4&3 victory against Wheaton Ennis to secure the team championship. The final match of the day between fifth-year Matt Comegys and Texas A&M's Shiv Parmar was stopped with Comegys holding a 2-up lead through 15 holes, when Harper clinched the overall team win for Texas.
The Longhorns, who earned the top seed in match play by virtue of their 21-stroke margin during the 54-hole stroke-play portion of the event on Monday and Tuesday, recorded their first team title of the 2026-27 season. Bennett and Comegys shared co-medalist honors during the stroke-play event with matching 54-hole totals of 9-under 207.
Texas will return to action when it competes at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational on Sept. 28-29 (Monday-Tuesday) at historic Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.
The Lineup
- Junior Eduardo Derbez Torres recorded a 4&2 win over Kris Kuvaas. The two players halved each of the first three holes, before Derbez Torres won hole 4 to take a 1-up lead. He held that advantage until he won hole 12 to move to 2-up. Leading 2-up through 14 holes, Derbez Torres won back-to-back holes on 15 and 16 to close out his 4&2 victory.
- Sophomore Adam Villanueva dropped a 6&4 decision to Landon Ashcraft. Ashcraft took control with a win on the first hole and added wins on holes 5, 7 and 8 to build a 4-up cushion through eight holes. He added wins on holes 13 and 14 to finish his match.
- Junior Daniel Bennett registered a 1-up victory against Aaron Pounds. Bennett won the opening hole and held a 1-up lead through six holes before Pounds evened the match with a win on hole 7. After Pounds won hole 10 to grab a 1-up advantage, Bennett rallied with wins on holes 11, 12 and 13 to build a 2-up lead. Pounds responded with wins on holes 14 and 16 to again the match. The two players halved hole 17 before Bennett closed out his 1-up victory with a birdie on 18.
- Freshman Brooks Harper secured the overall team victory with a 4&3 win over Wheaton Ennis. Harper won holes 1, 3 and 5 to build an early 3-up cushion. Ennis won hole 6 to close the deficit to 2-down, but Harper won holes 9 and 10 to increase his advantage to 4-up. After the two players traded wins on holes 12 and 13, Ennis won hole 14 before Harper finished off his 4&3 victory with a birdie on hole 15.
- Fifth-year Matt Comegys held a 2-up lead in his match against Shiv Parmar, when the match was stopped after Harper clinched the team victory for the Longhorns. Parmar won holes 1 and 3 and held a 2-up cushion through four holes. Comegys rallied to win holes 5 and 6 to even the match. The match stayed all square until Comegys won holes 12 and 15 with birdies to build a 2-up advantage. Comegys was in excellent position to clinch his match on 16 when Harper secured the team title for Texas.
