Vegas' back-to-back 71s ties Men's Golf for fourth at CordeValle

SAN MARTIN, Calif. -- Junior Jhonattan Vegas shot two one-under par 71s during the first round of competition at the CordeValle Collegiate, in San Martin, Calif. Monday to lead the Texas men's golf team. The Longhorns sit in a tie for fourth with California at three-over par.
Texas posted rounds of 291 and 288 to get to within 14 shots of Day 1 leader UCLA with a score of 579, three-over par. Northwestern is second with an eight-under total of 568 and Arkansas is third with a one-under 575.
The Longhorns were led by Vegas who sits in a tie for tenth place after shooting his second career back-to-back under par rounds in tournament action with identical 71s. The 71 is a season low for Vegas, whose career low round is 69, notched last season at the National Invitational.
Junior Farren Keenan was second on the team, tied for 16th in the tournament, with an even par, two round total of 144 after shooting rounds of 73 and 71, his season low score. Sophomore Jace Moore started off well by shooting an opening round of even par 72, with his first eagle of the season on the 18th hole. He then struggled in round two, totaling a three-over par 75. He sits in a tie for 26th place.
Senior Matthew Mills started with a three over-par 147 after 36 holes, good enough for a tie at 30th, while senior Jeff Bell rounds out the UT contingent with a seven over-par 151 and sits in a tie for 55th place.
UT will finish its final round of the CordeValle Collegiate on Tuesday afternoon.
