No. 1 Baseball pulls out 5-4 win over Kansas State in 10 innings

AUSTIN, Texas -- Carson Kainer (Tomball, Texas) scored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning as Wildcats' catcher David Baker was pulled off the plate on a throw from second base to give No. 1 Texas (26-4, 4-3 Big 12) a 5-4 victory over Kansas State (14-12, 1-7 Big 12) in front of a crowd of 5,373 fans at Disch-Falk Field on Saturday, April 2.
The Longhorns grabbed an early lead in the third inning when Robby Hudson (Redlands, Calif.) led off the frame with a single and scored on a Nick Peoples (Round Rock, Texas) RBI-double. After a walk, Seth Johnston (Boerne, Texas) and Taylor Teagarden (Carrollton, Texas) then came up with consecutive run-scoring base hits to claim a 3-0 advantage for UT. Quickly answering, Kansas State cut the Texas lead to 3-1 in the top of the fourth when Joe Roundy connected on his sixth home run of the year with two outs. Both teams then exchanged runs in the bottom of the fourth and top of the fifth innings respectively, bringing the score to 4-2 in favor of the Longhorns.
In the top of the seventh, the Wildcats threatened to tie the game when they put runners on first and second with no outs, but UT reliever Clayton Stewart (Angleton, Texas) induced a double play before striking out the next batter he faced to end the inning without surrendering a run. Following a scoreless eighth, KSU put together a rally in the ninth as a leadoff single by Eric Durante was followed by a one-out, RBI-double off the bat of David Murphy to make it a one-run game. Third baseman Barrett Rice then singled to place runners on the corners with one out before Jared Goedert delivered a run-scoring groundout to tie the game. With Kansas State still threatening in the inning, J. Brent Cox (Bay City, Texas) retired the next batter he faced to send the game to the bottom of the ninth. While UT received two-out singles from Drew Stubbs (Atlanta, Texas) and Johnston to place runners on the corners in the final frame, Wildcats' reliever Eric Rollins induced a short flyout to move the game to extra innings.
After Kansas State went in order in the top of the 10th, the Longhorns managed to load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the frame on a leadoff double from Kainer, a bunt-single from David Maroul (Benbrook, Texas) and an intentional walk to Thomas Incaviglia (Monterey, Calif.). Chance Wheeless (Round Rock, Texas) then came to the plate and hit a grounder to second base with the infield in that resulted in a throw to home. When the throw pulled Baker off the plate and Kainer avoided the tag, he was called safe to give the Horns a 5-4 victory in their first extra-inning contest of the year. While Cox picked up his fourth win of the year in relief, Rollins shouldered the tough loss despite allowing two unearned runs on six hits over 6.2 strong innings.
Headlining the UT offense on the day was Johnston, who went 3-for-3 with a RBI, Stubbs, who scored twice during a two-hit effort, and Kainer, who extended his current hitting streak to eight games. Kansas State's 10-hit attack, meanwhile, was paced by Murphy, who went 3-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI, and Rice, who posted a pair of hits on the afternoon. Of additional note for Texas, Stewart hurled three scoreless innings in relief of starter Adrian Alaniz (Sinton, Texas), who struck out four over five innings of work on the day.
This three-game series wraps up on Sunday, April 3 with a 1 p.m. Central first pitch at Disch-Falk Field.
