AUSTIN, Texas -- Sophomore Randy Boone (Yoakum, Texas) allowed only one unearned run on four hits over a career-best eight innings of work to lead No. 1 Texas (37-9, 13-7 Big 12) to a 6-1 victory over No. 14 Missouri (31-13, 11-7 Big 12) in front of 5,780 fans at Disch-Falk Field on Sunday, May 1. Of note, the five-run victory gave UT a 2-1 series win, which marked the Longhorns' sixth-straight conference series win.
Texas sent nine men to the plate in the bottom of the first and broke on top 4-0. After loading the bases with no outs on a walk and two singles, Will Crouch (Austin, Texas) came up with a two-run double in front of a sacrifice fly from Chance Wheeless (Round Rock, Texas) to account for the first three runs of the game. Carson Kainer (Tomball, Texas) then doubled with two outs before scoring on a RBI-hit from Taylor Teagarden (Carrollton, Texas). Mizzou attempted to counter in the top of the second by placing runners on the corners with two outs, but Boone induced a groundout to end the frame. A single from Nick Peoples (Round Rock, Texas) to open the bottom of the second was then followed by a sacrifice bunt and a RBI-base hit off the bat of Seth Johnston (Boerne, Texas) to stake the Horns to a 5-0 advantage.
From there, the game settled into a pitcher's duel as MU relievers Dustin Braud and Nick Admire scattered three hits over the next four innings and Boone faced the minimum over the next five frames to move the contest to the bottom of the seventh. In the bottom of the frame with two down, Wheeless then connected on the second home run of his career to establish a 6-0 UT lead. Answering in the eighth, the Tigers received a leadoff single from first baseman Derek Chambers that combined with an error on the hit, a groundout and an infield base hit off the bat of Trevor Helms to plate an unearned score and make it a 6-1 contest. In the ninth, J. Brent Cox (Bay City, Texas) came in to relieve Boone and worked a scoreless final frame to preserve the win for the Horns. While Boone improved his record to 5-3 while walking only two and striking out six over eight innings, MU starter Doug Mathis incurred the loss for the Tigers.
Leading the offensive attack for the Horns was Johnston, who went 3-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 10 games, and the trio of Wheeless, Kainer and Teagarden, who each collected a pair of hits on the afternoon while combining for two runs scored and three RBI. Additionally, Drew Stubbs (Atlanta, Texas) also extended his current hitting streak to 13 games with a first-inning single. On the other side of the ledger, Missouri was led by Derek Chambers, who went 2-for-2 with a run scored and a walk.
Up next, the Horns welcome the Broncs of UT-Pan American to Disch-Falk Field for a 6:15 p.m. Central game on Tuesday, May 3.
