Extra bases with Dustin Majewski
01.30.2006 | Baseball
A two-year letterman and two-time All-American on the Forty Acres, Dustin Majewski concluded his career as the school's all-time career batting average leader with a .395 mark. Majewski ranks among the top 10 in school history for several categories including single-season batting average, hits, RBI, and total bases. Now a member of the Toronto Blue Jays Organization, Majewski recently took time to answer some questions for TexasSports.com.
TexasSports.com: What is it like coming back as an Alum and playing against your former team?
Dustin Majewski: "It's a huge deal and a lot of fun to come back here. It's nice to see a lot of my old teammates and friends. It's just a fun environment -- everyone is just out here to have a good time. The fans here are great and they proved it again during this year's Alumni Game. It was raining all morning, and they were standing out in line waiting to get in."
TS: What are some of your fondest memories of playing for Texas?
DM: "I was very lucky -- during my two years here, we went to the College World Series and we won it during my junior year. Some of the many memories that stick out are coming back from the loser's bracket and winning the Big 12 Tournament in both 2002 and 2003. The two years I was here was a tremendous experience, and I wouldn't trade it for anything."
TS: What is your favorite memory of playing at Disch-Falk Field?
DM: "It has to be the NCAA Super Regional during my junior year when we played Houston. It was about 120 degrees on the turf, the people were baking out on top of outfield buses and U-Hauls, and we had about seven or eight thousand fans who were just loving life and cheering us on. Playing in front of that crowd and in that atmosphere was just great."
TS: What is the life of a minor-league baseball player like?
DM: "Well it's not Texas (laughs). You can't beat this University with the way we travel and the way they take care of us. In the minor leagues, you go back to high school a little bit, but it's a new experience. It's one of those things that if you don't ever experience, you wouldn't really understand what minor league baseball is like. I've met a lot of great guys and traveled to a bunch of different places. It's been a good experience. Your ultimate goal in minor league ball is to one day make it to the big leagues, and that's what I'm working toward. Hopefully, I can get there someday."
TS: Now that you are a member the Toronto Blue Jays organization, where do you think you'll be playing this upcoming season?
DM: "I'll probably end up playing in the Northeast, either in New Hampshire (Double A affiliate New Hampshire Fisher Cats) or New York (Triple A affiliate Syracuse Skychiefs). It's a part of the country I've never seen before, so that'll be neat. I'll meet a bunch of different guys, and hopefully it will be a good experience. I'm looking forward to having a good, consistent year where everyday I feel like I can help the team."
