No. 2 Soccer ties Iowa State, 1-1
10.05.2007 | Soccer
AMES, Iowa -- Junior Courtney Gaines scored the lone Texas goal as the second-ranked Longhorns tied co-Big 12 standings leader Iowa State, 1-1, at ISU Soccer Complex on Friday, Oct. 5.
UT head coach Chris Petrucelli and the Longhorns move to 8-1-2 overall and 1-0-1 in the Big 12 this year. Iowa State, who shares the top spot in the conference with Missouri, is 6-1-3 overall and 2-0-1 in league play.
The scoring efforts began when Iowa State sophomore Elise Reed put the Cyclones ahead 1-0, after 21 minutes, 55 seconds of play. Reed placed the ball in the top right corner of the goal from 10 yards out.
The Cyclones' lead lasted less than ten minutes as UT's offense put a goal on the scoreboard. Junior transfer Courtney Gaines (Sugar Land, Texas) bent a corner kick at 31:16 into the net for her second of the season and the only Longhorn goal of the night.
Neither team could find the back of the net for the remaining 58:44. Texas played extra minutes for just the second time in the ISU-UT all-time series and also this season; UT played LSU to a 2-2 draw after a pair of overtime periods on Sept. 18.
UT junior goalkeeper Dianna Pfenninger (Sugar Land, Texas) played all 110 minutes in the nets, recording two saves and allowing a single score. The All-Big 12 netminder gave up just her eighth goal in 11 matches.
Cyclones' sophomore goalkeeper Ann Gleason was equally as impressive, registering seven saves against one goal.
On offense, the Longhorns held the advantage in shots (20-5), shots on goal (8-3), and corner kicks (7-3).
Iowa State was whistled for 13 fouls against UT's seven.
The Longhorns return to Austin for a Sunday afternoon match against Nebraska. The Longhorns and Cornhuskers take the field at Mike A. Myers Stadium at 1 p.m. CT.
POSTGAME QUOTES
HEAD COACH Chris Petrucelli
On the overall performance: We played pretty well. In the end, we just didn't finish any of the quality chances we created. As I said to the team, there are key moments in the game where we have to step up and make it happen. When we had chances to finish, we weren't clean enough. We didn't take care of the moments.
On Courtney Gaines' goal off a corner kick: [Courtney] hit a great ball. She served it straight in over the goalkeeper's head. This is something we go over and over in practice, and it was great to see it come out in a game.
