No. 6 Baseball wins series opener against Texas Tech, 7-2

AUSTIN, Texas -- Randy Boone recorded a strikeout for the only out needed on Sunday as No. 6 Texas posted a 7-2 win over Texas Tech in the resumption of Friday's suspended contest at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
On Friday, Texas (29-10, 10-3) drew first blood in the bottom of the first. With two outs, Kyle Russell singled to centerfield and stole second base. Bradley Suttle singled down the leftfield line to plate Russell.
The Longhorns tacked on two more runs in the second. Nick Peoples walked and Preston Clark doubled to leftfield to drive in Peoples. Travis Tucker walked and Josh Prince pushed runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. Jordan Danks followed with a sacrifice fly to drive in Clark and Chance Wheeless plated Tucker with an infield single to give Texas a 4-0 lead.
The Red Raiders put together a rally in the top of the third. Doug Thennis and Jason Seefeld both singled to put runners at the corners and Kyle Martin drove in Thennis with an infield single.
Texas added another run in the bottom of the third when Suttle delivered a solo home run over the fence in rightfield to leadoff the frame.
Texas Tech (22-14, 5-7) trimmed one run off the lead in the fifth with a two-out home run by Roger Kieschnick, cutting the margin to 5-2.
Wheeless started another Texas rally with a leadoff double down the rightfield line in the fifth inning. Russell put runners at the corners with a single to rightfield. Suttle plated Wheeless with a single to rightfield and Russell Moldenhauer inflated the cushion to 7-2 with a doubled off the centerfield fence.
Suttle went 3-for-4 with one home run and three RBI. Wheeless went 2-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to 16 games, 10th longest in school history. Russell went 2-for-5 with two runs scored.
For Texas Tech, Geoff Byrns went 3-for-4 and Martin went 3-for-5 with one RBI.
James Russell (8-2) earned the win, scattering nine hits and allowing two runs while striking out a career-high 11 batters over 6.2 innings.
A.J. Ramos (7-2) was saddled with the loss, yielding seven runs on nine hits and two walks over 4.1 innings.
