Baseball coasts to 10-1 win over Texas Tech

AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 6 Texas posted five runs in the first inning and used a strong pitching performance by Adrian Alaniz to coast to a 10-1 win over Texas Tech in Big 12 Conference baseball action Saturday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Alaniz (9-2) allowed one run on three hits and one walk while striking out seven over seven innings to earn the win.
Texas' first four batters logged hits to leadoff the first inning to ignite a five-run surge. Jordan Danks hit a leadoff triple and scored on a single by Kyle Russell. Chance Wheeless hit a two-run home run over the rightfield fence, staking Texas to a 3-0 lead. Bradley Suttle kept the rally alive with a single to leftfield. Preston Clark reached on a fielding error and Nick Peoples pushed runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. Russell Moldenhauer capped off the first-inning scoring with a two-run single up the middle, driving in Suttle and Clark.
Texas (30-10, 11-3) had rallies in the third and fourth innings halted with line-drive double plays, before tacking on three runs in the fifth. Wheeless led off with a walk, stole second base and scored on a double down the leftfield line by Clark. Peoples reached on an error and Moldenhauer singled through the right side, plating Clark. The fifth-inning scoring was capped off by a single to leftfield by Travis Tucker to push Peoples across, inflating the cushion to 8-0.
Texas Tech (22-15, 5-8) broke the scoring seal in the top of the seventh when Roger Kieschnick delivered a one-out home run over the fence in right centerfield, trimming the margin to 8-1.
Texas put hopes of a Red Raiders' comeback to rest with two runs in its half of the seventh. The inning featured an RBI double by Danks and an RBI single by Russell.
Clark led the Texas hit parade going 3-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored. It was the third time this season Clark has registered two doubles in a game. Moldenhauer went 2-for-3 with a career-high three RBI. Wheeless went 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs and two RBI. He extended his current hitting streak to 17 games, tied for eighth longest in school history. Danks and Russell both added a pair of hits.
Hunter Harris preserved Alaniz's gem by pitching two innings of scoreless relief. He allowed one hit and one walk while striking out three.
Josh Scofield (0-2) was saddled with the loss for Tech. He allowed five runs, four earned, on five hits over 0.1 innings.
Texas and Texas Tech wrap up the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m.
