Baseball completes sweep of Texas Tech with 4-2 win

AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 6 Texas received solid performances from pitchers Joseph Krebs and Randy Boone and used a three-run seventh inning to post a 4-2 win over Texas Tech in Big 12 Conference baseball action Sunday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. With the victory, the Longhorns completed a three-game sweep of the Red Raiders.
Krebs posted his longest career outing going six innings. He allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits and one walk, while striking out six. Boone (2-5) picked up the win in relief, pitching three perfect innings with one strikeout.
Texas (31-10, 12-3) drew first blood with a run in the third inning. With one out, Michael Demperio singled to left field, stole second base and scored on a double down the rightfield line by Jordan Danks.
Texas Tech (22-16, 5-9) tied the game 1-1 in the top of the fourth. Doug Thennis reached on a fielding error by the Longhorns' second baseman and moved to second on a groundout, setting up an RBI single by Matt Smith.
The Red Raiders took their first lead of the series with one run in the fifth inning. Ben Baker drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jason Seefeld and scored on a single to leftfield by Kyle Martin.
The Longhorns reclaimed the lead with their three-run seventh inning. Travis Tucker drew a leadoff walk and stole both second and third to ignite the rally. With one out, Danks drove in the equalizer with a single to centerfield. Kyle Russell followed with a double to the gap in left centerfield to plate Danks with the go-ahead run. Chance Wheeless provided an insurance run, plating Russell with a sacrifice fly and staking Texas to a 4-2 lead.
Danks led all hitters at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one double, one runs scored and two RBI.
Martin led Tech's hitters with a 2-for-4 effort, including one double and one RBI.
Colt Hynes (2-4) was saddled with the loss for Texas Tech. He allowed four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out five over 6.1 innings.
Texas returns to action Tuesday with the Longhorns traveling to Houston for a 7 p.m. contest at No. 7 Rice.
