Baseball drops 7-3 decision to Texas A&M at Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship

OKLAHOMA CITY -- No. 6 Texas lost a 7-3 decision to No. 17 Texas A&M in both teams' second game at the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship at Bricktown Ballpark on Thursday evening.
After the game, both teams stand at 1-1 with one game remaining in round robin play. Texas plays Nebraska at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Texas A&M drew first blood in the bottom of the first inning. Dane Carter drew a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ben Feltner, stole third base and scored on a fielding error by Texas second baseman Travis Tucker.
The Longhorns claimed the lead in the top of the third inning. Nick Peoples laced a leadoff single to rightfield, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tucker and scored an equalizer on a single to centerfield by Jordan Danks. Danks stole second base and scored on a single by Chance Wheeless.
The Aggies reclaimed the lead with five runs in the bottom of the third inning. Brian Ruggiano, Brodie Greene and Carter all singled to load the bases. With one out, UT starter James Russell hit Brandon Hicks with a pitch to push Ruggiano across. One out later, Craig Stinson delivered a grand slam home run over the leftfield fence, staking A&M to a 6-2 lead.
Texas A&M increased the lead to 7-2 with a solo home run by Blake Stouffer in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Longhorns capped the scoring with a run in the seventh inning. With one out, Kyle Russell singled to rightfield, advanced to third on a single by Wheeless and scored on a single to rightfield by Bradley Suttle.
Danks and Wheeless each had two hits for the Longhorns.
James Russell (8-4) was saddled with the loss for Texas. He yielded seven runs, six earned, on seven hits and one walk while striking out four.
Kirkland Rivers (2-3) earned the victory in his longest career outing. He allowed three runs on seven hits and five walks while striking out three over 6.2 innings.
