NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- University of Texas redshirt freshman Bobby Hudson shot rounds of 68, 73, 67 and 71 to claim a one-stroke victory Friday in the 2007 Tennessee State Amateur Championship at the par 72, 6,820-yard Belle Meade Country Club.
Hudson (Memphis, Tenn.) claims his first Tennessee State Amateur title and becomes the third state amateur champion on the 2007-08 Texas roster. Senior Kevin Schultz (Richardson, Texas) won the 2005 Texas State Amateur Championship, and sophomore Charlie Holland (Dallas, Texas) captured the 2007 Texas State Amateur Championship.
"It was a great feeling to win this tournament," Hudson said. "My grandfather walked the course with me throughout the tournament, and he introduced me to golf many years ago, so it was really special having him there with me. He had come close to winning this event four or five times himself, so it was special to get this win for him."
With his first season of collegiate golf set to kick off in September, Hudson will use the victory to his benefit as he and the Longhorns navigate through a rigorous fall schedule.
"This gives me a lot of confidence heading into the fall, having beaten some great players here in a 72-hole tournament," Hudson said. "I just missed out on getting into the U.S. Amateur, so it's great for my summer to culminate with a victory here."
